JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP A bear walking upright around a township development that has become an Internet sensation is injured and needs to be left alone, according to wildlife officials monitoring the situation.
The black bear has an injury to both front legs, including its paws and possibly an elbow, said Tracy Leaver, the executive director of the Woodlands Wildlife Refuge.
There's no official cause of how the bear got injured. Kelcey Burguess, a black bear biologist with the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife, said he most likely "got hit by a car."
Burguess said the bear is expected to make a full recovery. "He's exhibiting signs of healing and becoming more mobile. He's going to be just fine."
At this point, officials will not interfere in the situation and let the bear heal on its own. However, they will continue to monitor the animal.
As for the residents in the area, they are the best source of information, Burguess said. "We ask the residents to let us know how things are going, they live in the area. They can tell us more than anything."
Tracy Leaver stressed that if people are going to observe him, they need to do it at a distance.
"The attention is causing more stress for him," Leaver said. "Any observation has to come from a safe distance."
The worst thing someone can do in this situation is feed the bear, Leaver said. He will become a "problem bear" if he gets used to having food provided to him, she said.

Wildlife ping.
Didn’t know a cause had to be “official.” Is there an unofficial cause?
Newsmax has a good story on it. I guess the Bears front paws are hurt. Hope he gets better.
Just the bare facts.
Just Moocheel out for a stroll..........
It’s not the video link — it’s the missing link that scientists have been searching for.
Out of the woods, into the plains and, from there, into the suburbs.

A bear walking upright around a New Jersey real estate development already reads as he may be categorized as a "problem bear".
“He will become a “problem bear” if he gets used to having food provided to him, she said”
Now why does that sound familiar,,,
I think to qualify as a, ‘problem’, bear in NJ, the bear would have to be carrying a sidearm...
He bares responsibility for his actions.
Smarter than the average bear.
Yes, agreed, poor bear.
I saw this on the news last night.
I was stuned!
Same town where alleged anaconda was......
I saw it also on Red Eye.
I talked to a ranger who has shot a bear. It could not be taken down at long range. It was a tough bear. He told me when he saw the bear skinned it looked very much like a human. It was a sad memory.
I used to be fascinated by bears because I encountered a lot of them at Rose Valley campgrounds near Ojai CA by the falls. The momma would come into camp at dusk and raid the trash cans with her cubs. I would scoop up my toy poodle at the fire and hide in my Audi. At night I could hear them sloshing through the stream next to our tent. I would buy books on bear and they would terrify me. I got rid of those books. I still have the teddy bears my husband gave me while courting me, but that’s enough bear for me now.
