More than 2,500 Ground Zero rescuers and responders have come down with cancer, and a growing number are seeking compensation for their illnesses, The Post has learned.
The grim toll has skyrocketed from the 1,140 cancer cases reported last year.
In its latest tally, the World Trade Center Health Program at Mount Sinai Hospital counts 1,655 responders with cancer among the 37,000 cops, hard hats, sanitation workers, other city employees and volunteers it monitors, officials told The Post.
The tragic sum rises to 2,518 when firefighters and EMTs are added. The FDNY, which has its own WTC health program, said Friday it counts 863 members with cancers certified for 9/11-related treatment.
A retired FDNY captain, 63, who toiled non-stop at Ground Zero for a week after 9/11, and months in all, recently received a $1.5 million award from the federal 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund for lung disease and inoperable pancreatic cancer.

That’s 7% over 12 years, among an age group increasingly prone to cancer as time progresses, AND (safe to assume) is more likely to smoke.
General population is about 0.5% _new_cases_per_year_, and includes youth/children unlikely to develop cancer at all. 0.5% over 12 years is 6%, plus aggravating factors ... I’ll dare say that the 9/11 responders & cleanup are proving to have slightly _lower_ than average cancer rates.
“WTC epidemiologists say studies show that 9/11 workers have gotten certain cancers at a significantly higher rate than expected in the normal population prostate, thyroid, leukemia and multiple myeloma.”
They do not mention the actual increase in the rate, or whether it could simply be attributed to higher detection levels due to increased testing.
Most likely asbestos, as there were tons of it used in the lower floors of the WTC.
Never trust statistical reporting by the News. Ever.
From the Greatest Generation to the Greediest Generation in one, well, generation.
But the thought of filthy ambulance chasing lawyers getting a third of some big jury award against the city, state,Federal gov't,the Port Authority or the airlines makes my blood boil.
Unless you've graduated from medical school I'd suggest that you back off here.Mount Sinai Hospital is one of the finest hospitals on earth and,as such, you'd be hard pressed to find a dishonest,or incompetent, physician of its staff.Yes,any lawyers involved could very well be crooked (as I suggested in an earlier post).Perhaps you should attend medical school and learn of the hundreds...if not thousands...of dangerous elements that were floating around in the air...and present in the rubble itself...before you begin pontificating.
The lawyers being crooked...very possible. The physicians at Mount Sinai...no way,Jose!

Don’t do it — they’re our “friends”.
Don’t they also own part of FOX News?
With “friends” like that, who needs enemies?
So we are not talking about something significant. Would be interesting to see CA rate of people in the 30 to 70 age group versus total population.
I’ve worked in the oilfields most of my life around asbestos, volatile fluids and gases and was exposed over an extended time to all, even a few good shot’s of agent orange to start it off. When I hit 55 years old I was diagnosed with papillary cancer of the thyroid which is about the time most of us develop it if we’re going to. Thyroid removed and end of story other than on synthroid the rest of my life, I’m 64 and healthy as an old horse can be. I don’t need to be a graduate of medical school to know the hazards of particulates, chemicals and fuels but I do have knowledge of human greed and deception and that has been exposed several time already with some 9-11 responders.
Oh,that's good to know. Please let me know how to contact you so I can consult *you* next time I start coughing up blood,or feel weak,or become dizzy.Who needs physicians from Mount Sinai when we can consult Dr Dusty Road!
And BTW....did you stay at a Holiday Inn last night?
Highly unlikely. The latency for mesothelioma and asbestos related lung cancer is about 30 years. (I’m a licensed asbestos handler in NYC.)

I don’t know what the numbers mean without comparison to non 9-11 numbers. I’m so sure there are a lot of people gaming the system, as usual for social programs.
No I didn’t stay in in a Holiday Inn last night but I’ve spent my time in them. I’m a Petroleum Engineer who probably has more experience with the particulates, chemicals and volatile gasses they were faced with than you do and many others. No need to call me DR!
I can absolutely guarantee that you have more experience in that area than do I.
....and many others.
*Some* others perhaps but most assuredly not *all* others. How can I say that? Twenty years of working along side Pulmonary Disease specialists at a world famous hospital is how I can say it.I'm willing to assume that it takes noteworthy intelligence, good effort and many months to become a Petroleum Engineer. But I can assure you that it takes *exceptional* intelligence,*enormous* effort and *many* years to become a Pulmonary Disease specialist.I'd *never* consult *any* physician regarding the operation of an oil refinery and I'd just as surely *never* consult a Petroleum Engineer if I ever started coughing up blood.
You seem to have far more confidence in the wide ranging skills and knowledge of Petroleum Engineers than do I.
