I don't watch TV much these days, so I can't say what have been popular miniseries in the past decade or so, but I remember there used to be big budget miniseries on TV all the time (A.D., The Winds of War, Roots. Etc). In your opinion, what were the greatest miniseries of all time?
Don’t forget A Testament of Youth.
The original 6 hour series of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy based on the book by the same name by John Le Carre was extremely well done. You had the feel that the movie scenes and dialogue followed the best ever spy novel exactly.
Shogun was another excellent series. It dealt with the opening of Japan to Europeans through the eyes of a European who finds himself stranded in a fiercely feudalistic Asian culture with no comprehension of the language or customs. Like the book, I found myself transported by the series into that era in Japan and beginning to understand the culture. And it was beautifully filmed as well.
Lonesome Dove. Best ever series about Texas. Nuf said.
For the Holocaust scenes alone.....Gielgud and Seymour were tremendous.
The last scene of the series still tears me apart every time I watch it.
North and South was very good.
Band of Brothers was excellent.
A Town Called Alice; Brian Brown was stunningly good in the part.
My short list:
Lonesome Dove
The original, British House of Cards (Ian Richardson was magnificent).
The Maxx - an mid-90s animated miniseries that ran on, of all networks, MTV. Easily the best storyline I’ve ever seen in an animated production.
Shogun.
Rome is his work, too. You can do worse by seeing more.
Oh, and of course, Band of Brothers. I deserve a Jethro Gibbs-smack for forgetting that one!
I Claudius
Chiefs
House of Cards, (both versions)
Shogun, Holocaust, V.
BTW, can’t forget “Amerika,” that is where we are headed.
War and Remembrance..
For the Holocaust scenes alone.....Gielgud and Seymour were tremendous.
The last scene of the series still tears me apart every time I watch it.
Buck Henry (Robert Mitchum) was great, too. I loved it when he put the Nazi waiters in their place.
I heard main characters keep dying which made it sound like it might be painful to watch.
Lonesome Dove
Fresno
Winds of War was good
also Centennial
all the Lonesome dove series are online...
I’m partial to the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles.
