The man who invented the vanishing spray that has been used at the World Cup said UEFA will use it in the Champions League for the first time next season - and hopes it will be adopted in the Premier League. The foam has been used by referees at free-kicks to make sure defensive walls do not encroach on the 10-yard gap - it lasts around a minute before it disappears.

Pretty neat seeing the refs spray the semicircle for the ball and the 10 yard line.

THe NFL should use it for marking first downs.

There are the “chains” that do that already. Also, given how wide the field is the refs might make a crooked line.

Certainly no down side to it far as I can see.

I just thought it would be funny to see an NFL ref spraying foam on the field to mark a turnover or first down, something.

THey’d go through a whole can before the commercials were over.

What I want to know is what is the magic spray they use on all the players who get injured. I see them spraying the knees and ankles of assorted injured players who then get up and resume duties.

Let me guess. The magic spray is called Flop Away.

Uh, no. In the NFL the commercials are never over. I think it was the Wall Street Journal who did a study of the average time the game was actually played in the NFL. It turns out that the actual game play time in an average NFL game is only 11 minutes within the entire 3 hour spectacle.

From the time the QB hikes the ball until the play is whistled dead -- 11 minutes. The rest of the 3 hours is replays, commercials, huddles, sideline shots, and assorted chatter.

I'll be following the last few W/C rounds, but during the break took some time to get refreshed on the finer points:

DIVING 101
1- Tumble uncontrollably to the pitch after a "flagrant" foul
2- Writhe in sheer agony until a Yellow Card is issued by the Referee
3- Wait approximately 5 seconds; when the coast is clear, get up & rejoin the play.
