A cellphone video emerged this weekend of a California cop appearing to brutally beat a woman for no discernible reason on the side of a highway.
CBS Los Angeles reports that the video, filmed on Tuesday evening, depicts a California Highway Patrol officer angrily crossing the La Brea Freeway, yanking a barefooted woman down, and punching her “more than 11 times in the face.”
As of now, the CHP says that it is investigating the incident, but said in a statement that “since there is an ongoing investigation, it would be premature to comment on this specific video segment without reviewing the entire incident.” They also took the woman, who lacked identification, to a hospital for a physical and mental evaluation once she was in custody.

Yeh there’s nothing like a few good punches to the face and some meds to get a mental patient back on track. After that cop straigtened her out on the finer points of MMA ground pound she prolly won’t even need meds anymore. Ya just gotta know how to handle these people. Once you get a small woman on the ground its important to get in a few good licks just to stay in practice for when you get home.

This happened about two miles from my office — I use that onramp regularly, and there’s a group of “homeless” people who sometimes panhandle at that location. About two weeks ago, a “new’ person showed up, who could even be this woman. She didn’t so much panhandle, as yell at passing cars, and on occasion just step out into moving traffic. This could be the same person, or someone different, it doesn’t really matter, but it does color my own perception of the events because I know, from seeing it with my own eyes, that there are occasionally crazy people at that location who really do wander around in traffic. It’s insanely dangerous, places everyone at great risk, and is manifestly something that I want the cops to address...either by citing the non-crazy people for the VC violation (to try to get them to stop), or taking the crazy ones for a 5150 evaluation (so they can get some help, at least temporarily). The way we deal with psychotics is a topic for a different day: at the moment, we’ve dumped them on the street, where we expect the cops to deal with them.
So, I fully believe that this person was a danger to self/others. The cop had a couple of choices: play shoo fly, tell her to get out of traffic and leave. Of course, she’ll be right back at it as soon as he’s gone. Or, do what he decided to do (his duty, by the way), and take her 5150.
Now, you don’t like the fact that he had to use force to do that, and you don’t like the force that he did use. I get that. But, since you’re the expert, what would the proper course of action have been? Seriously, you seem to have a better idea, and I’d like to hear it.

What should officer friendly do? How about his g0d-damned job? You know, "protect and serve". If this tan shirted NAZI is so incompetent to be unable to handcuff a woman, perhaps he'd best get another job......like sweeping dog crap up for the sanitation department. Let's not even get into a discussion on how rotten we now treat those mentally challenged and dump them on the streets and allow them to fester and sink into Hell on Earth so they end up in already overcrowded and festering prisons.
When your wife/daughter/mother or mistress get bashed like this woman, I cannot wait to hear you say she deserved it.

Well I’m done with this thread for the time being but I will say even though its unsettling to find the number of aberrant souls that inhabit Free Republic. Fortunately most people here know right from wrong.
What happened on that video is wrong on every level. I hope the cop is put off the force although he will likely be moved somewhere for awhile til things settle down. I also hope that the poor woman who likely has mental issues is not too badly hurt and/or traumatized by being savagely attacked and beaten for no other reason than she didn’t move fast enough to suit some SOB thug.
The only thing I would say to that cop is that karma has a way of coming around and biting you in the butt.

How? Really, are you that dense? He had “control” by fact of a dominant position. In his position he could have easily cuffed her, not continued the beating. That much is obvious.

Look, I’m not the expert, it seems that you are. He had a dominant position if he wanted to inflict injury, but (and i’m just going on the video here), that’s not what he wanted...he just wanted her to stop thrashing around and whatever else she was doing and get the cuffs on. Which happened quickly enough once the other fellow showed up and rolled the woman over on her stomach so that the officer could get her hands behind her back and apply the cuffs.
But I’m still trying to figure out how he could have so easily applied the cuffs without injuring her...again, I’m no expert, but as I understand it, you want the hands behind the back, and since handcuffs are oval, and not round, you have to put them on so that they are aligned with the wrist bones, otherwise you can really jack someone up.
So, how do you do that from the position they were both in? Really, I’d like to know how. You insist it’s easy, so surely it can’t be that hard to explain. Pray, enlighten me.
