Hell Hath No Fury Like the 707-Horsepower 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat
Car and Driver ^ | July 2014 | ANDREW WENDLER

Muscle cars are all about the numbers, and Dodge has just issued a triple-digit warning to the rest of the ponycar herd. Packing 707 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque, the supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V-8 “Hellcat” engine is the very stuff Saturday night legends are made of. But don’t take our word for it—watch Dodge brand boss Tim Kuniskis set the record straight in the exclusive video below.

Installed in the 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, this wild engine has the loftiest power figure of any V-8 engine in Chrysler history. To put it numerically, the Hellcat brings 45 more horsepower than the last Shelby Mustang GT500, 127 more horsepower than the last Camaro ZL1 we tested, and—in what may be viewed as an act of sacrilege by some—67 more hp than the V-10 in the current Viper.

Nice!

Who will be next with the big numbers?

Who will be the first to 1000 HP?

I recently got two free subscriptions to a couple of auto performance magazines.

It is astounding the horse power some of these cars have. A bunch of them are well over a thousand. Of course many of them cost over a million.

I love performance but that is just crazy.

They screwed up the back end just like they did in 1971. Well, there go my plans to buy one.
Like I ever could.

Who will be the first to 1000 HP?

It looks like the ugly Veyron has, at least unofficially (or officially, in the metric system) reached that distinction.

According to the Veyron Wiki entry:

"Engine output: According to Volkswagen Group and certified by TÜV Süddeutschland, the final production Veyron engine produces 1,001 metric horsepower (736 kW; 987 bhp) of motive power, and generates 1,250 newton metres (922 lbf·ft) of torque.[2][24] The nominal figure has been stated by Bugatti officials to be conservative, with the real total being 1,020 metric horsepower (750 kW; 1,006 bhp)."

(But as to looks.... ugh!)

LOL! I misread the headline and I thought it was powered by a Boeing 707 engine.

I rented an Avenger not too long ago and was quite impressed with it. The car I learned to drive in was a Dart Swinger in, shall we say, the early 70s.

Same here, I could afford a plastic scale model and I would prefer one like Kowalski had in Vanishing Point either scale or in a dream, a real one.

Just for kicks I checked the rear tire price:

$529 each at Tire Rack

use traction control wisely!

Let's see. The Challenger, built in Canada by Fiat, or the Mustang Shelby, built in the US by Ford. I'll take the Ford.

Well, if I could afford either, I would take the Ford.

For this exercise, cost is irrelevant.

But then anyone who can afford this car can drive it on any street if he so chooses. It’s his money and he decides how he spends it,

Let’s not get elitist here!

More 1000 hp cars than you might think, mostly from boutique manufactures like Koenigsegg. America’s Saleen is on the list, as is the Dodge Viper Venom, Ford GT 1000, and a tuner Corvette.

I’m amazed by how many 500hp cars and SUVs there are that are quite plush.
