A Maryland mother was arrested Monday after she poisoned her young sons with eye drops, police in Pennsylvania said.
State police in Gettysburg announced they had arrested 23-year-old Samantha Unger, of Thurmont. She allegedly told state police in Gettysburg that she put drops of Visine into water and juice for her 3-year-old and that her 1-year-old became sick by drinking them accidentally.
Unger faces charges of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of children.
A police affidavit says both children became sick this spring, and the older boy required hospitalization. Doctors at Hershey Medical Center suspected poisoning, and tests found the drug in the 3-year-olds urine.

“Hey I am innocent, I was only trying to poison the 3 year old...”
Definitely some mental illness going on there.

She allegedly told state police in Gettysburg that she put drops of Visine into water and juice for her 3-year-old and that her 1-year-old became sick by drinking them accidentally. And she thought this was a good defense because . . . .? The age of legal consent to drink Visine is three years old????

American Academy of Ophthalmology's EyeSmart answered Tears are produced to keep your eyes moist. As new tears are produced, old tears drain from the eye through two small holes called the upper and lower puncta, located at the corner of your upper and lower eyelids near the nose. The tears then move through a passage called the canaliculus and into the lacrimal sac. From the sac, the tears drop down the tear duct (called nasolacrimal duct),
which drains into the back of your nose and throat. That is why your nose runs when you cry.

A common urban legend is that a few drops of Visine in an unsuspecting victim’s drink will cause a harmless bout of diarrhea. This will not produce diarrhea, but oral administration of Visine can induce dangerous side effects related to Visine’s ingredient tetrahydrozoline hydrochloride such as:
Dangerously low body temperature (hypothermia)
Blurred vision
Nausea and vomiting
Difficulty in breathing or even a complete halt in breathing
Elevating (hypertension) then dropping (hypotension) blood pressure
Possible coma
Seizures and tremors
Anyone ingesting Visine should get medical attention or contact a poison control center immediately.
