Massachusetts General Hospital plans to begin questioning all patients about their use of alcohol and illegal drugs starting this fall, even if they are at MGH for a totally unrelated issue.
Four questions will be posed, including how often have you had six or more drinks on one occasion, and how often have you used an illegal drug in the past year?
Enough yes answers could prompt a special team to conduct whats being called a bedside intervention and possible treatment.
The mandatory treatment plan comes amid soaring numbers of opiate addiction across Massachusetts and the region, with many hospitals working to improve addiction treatment

“I used to volunteer info on my drug and alcohol use to doctors”
I don’t lie to my doctor!
I think that started when there was a huge upsurge in veteran suicides, many unexpected by those around the person.
It’s good to hear that they didn’t ask about guns. Thanks.
“The VA has been asking about firearms the last several years.”
My doctor asked this and I answered no even though I had a (legally carried) gun in my pocket. It’s none of their business. Seriously, anybody who answered yes would be asking for no end of scrutiny and hassle. The thing is, when they supply your credit card info any ammo purchases or gun cleaning supplies will flag you instantly.
A good patient is just as important as a good doctor. Maybe more so.
Remember, there is no such thing as private information between you and your doctor. If it’s in the chart, then fedgov knows.
Also, make sure you read the fine print. I don’t know for a fact that this applies to health care, but many forms have criminal penalties for any falsehoods you put down.
Criminal? How can that be?
And the IRS.
With Obamacare in force, who knows where else it may apply?
Welcome Home!
My reply would be “nunya”. When they say “excuse me?”, I will explain, “nunya bidness”.
If the current mental health mentality were in place forty years ago half us Vietnam vets would be locked in the loony bin.
That’s right.
Welcome Home!
Just LIE!!! Everybody else does! But I really do like the “what difference does it make” answer.
Thanks. Never too late to hear that.
:^)
Agreed the doctor if he/she is going to treat someone does have a right to ask about drugs and alcohol use. That is common sense as many medications can cause adverse reactions and it's their hides the patient would sue. But all answers should be confidential & released to involved staff only. It's none of the states business.
I give blood regularly,as do many folks. You should hear some of the questions you're asked beforehand! Do you frequent hookers? Do you shoot drugs? Do you (a guy) take it up the ***? Etc,etc. As silly and embarrassing these questions are there's a legitimate medical reason for each.
We’ll never forget our fellow Nam vets.
