He should blame the error on a low level REPUBLICAN staffer. That is who they are blaming the IRS scandal on now, at least as of this am.

If you tell a lie often enough....

A rich guy like that no doubt has one of the Big Four doing his taxes. Can’t believe he “didn’t know.” What was he thinking?

This happens to a lot of high income people who are not especially financially inclined. They have everything on autopilot, automatic deposit, drafts and deductions, and don’t pay attention to their mail. Property tax is not recurring unless escrowed with a mortgage. So, the notices pile up on a desk or countertop until something hits the fan, certified mail, notice posted on the door by the sheriff, etc.

"O'Brien had been unaware he owed back taxes"

Yeah, that happens to me all the time. The IRS simply forgets to notify me.

I think they lost my email address.

If they had seized his house and were preparing to sell it, it had gone through a maze of notifications, threats, etc. then finally did it.

BTW even if they had sold it, he could have redeemed it within a period, which varies by state but is something like a year.

My mother got her 2012 property tax bill a week ago.

It was posted in 2012, but not delivered until recently.

There have been some rather blatant mailbox thefts lately, including mailboxes on post office premises.

The bill might have gotten lost, or just recently recovered from an undelivered bag of a lazy postal worker, or the ill-gotten cache of a mail thief.

However left Conan's politics are he does seem like a decent guy who wouldn't stoop to "the dog at the IRS office ate my property tax bill" type of lame-o excuse.

It was an $8000 Rhode Island property tax bill.

Not the IRS.
Not likely to be a scam pulled by a Hollywood big shot who dreamed of sneaking off with an extra $8000 bucks.

For Conan this is chump change, and he just lost track of the matter. I find that absolutely believable, and I’m a pretty cynical guy.

I have my financial thing set up so it anticipates routine transactions like paychecks, taxes owed, etc, etc, etc and when they’re expected to be received/paid.If I can do it talentless Conan can as well.

This is a city or county property tax bill. Nothing to do with the IRS.
