Taiwan's Quanta Computer Inc will start mass production of Apple Inc's first smartwatch in July, according to a source familiar with the matter, as the tech giant tries to prove it can still innovate against rival Samsung Electronics Co Ltd. The watch, which remains unnamed but which company followers have dubbed the iWatch, will be Apple's first foray into a niche product category that many remain skeptical about, especially as to whether it can drive profits amid cooling growth in tech gadgets.
Apple will introduce a smartwatch with a display that likely measures 2.5 inches diagonally and is slightly rectangular, one of the sources said. The source added that the watch face will protrude slightly from the band, creating an arched shape, and will feature a touch interface and wireless charging capabilities.
The source said Apple expects to ship 50 million units within the first year of the product's release, although these types of initial estimates can be subject to change. The watch is currently in trial production at Quanta, which will be the main manufacturer, accounting for at least 70 percent of final assembly, the source said.

I expect this will be an iFlop, except for the iFanboys.
Not many people wear watches anymore. I haven’t in years. There’s no point in it, when you’re carrying a phone around, and looking at so many other devices that has the time displayed.
Pip Boy ping. Always wondered why they didn;t just make an arm band with an iphone holder as a fashion accessory.
Tech is becoming too good for their own good.
Why buy a new phone when your old one is good enough or a gadget watch when all the functions are being included for free on your phone?
Now if they came up with a gadget that let me see near or far without my glasses, that I would buy.
Melted iPhone. Very Dali.
I’m at a sports bar atm... about 20 people around me... one older person wearing a watch
people just don’t wear them anymore
iWatch ... sales plummet
DOA
which iwatch will i watch?
At 2.5 inches, this looks like the seventh generation Nano for the wrist. It should have Bluetooth 4.x or 5.0 with easier and faster pairing/handoff. Since WiFi requires too much power for the size, Bluetooth will hopefully substitute for some of WiFi’s functionality.

It could get ugly.
Oh yeah?!? Well, guess what, Mr. Smarty-Pants? I wear a watch and I'm only, er, um, 55 years old...
Oh, never mind!
They look more like iRings to me.
Coming soon to an iTemple near you.
According to the WWDC, no need to type. You can tell Siri what to send as a text now but they added the ability to also send a quick voice memo file integrated right into the message app. It’s Gesture and voice controlled.
Don’t think that Apple hasn’t paid attention to the issues of texting and driving. They have.
As soon as the power was lost, there were no more computer-generated dropdown menus full of helpful suggestions to the traveler. No Google, no Bing, no search engines at all. The screen addicts couldn't light a fire with an entire pack of matches: Id seen them wasting match after match in the rain. The concept of dry kindling wood had escaped their educations entirely. After their matches and butane lighters were used up during the first winter, they froze to death, providing gear, clothing, and eventually the meat from their very bodies to the more ruthless and better prepared. Id seen their campsites, and Id seen their bones. Id worn their boots.

That’s the model I want - not the hip-hop bangle in the other picture. Next, I want the flying moon car.
