ALON® is an amazing new advanced ceramic that is based on a composition of aluminum oxy nitride with a cubic spinel crystal structure. It is hard, durable, and transparent in the near ultra violet, visible and near infrared wavelength of light. ALON® is synthesized and manufactured in tonnage commercial quantities by Surmet Corporation, the global leader in transparent optical ceramics technologies. Surmet is vertically integrated and synthesizes tonnage quantities of high purity ALON® powder for its own use. Surmet is a supplier of ALON® optical windows, domes, plates, rods and tubes for advanced applications. Fabricated ALON® products combine superior mechanical and optical properties matching those of sapphire with the added advantages of an isotropic cubic crystal structure. ALON® is an ideal material for applications requiring high strength light-weight durability and transparency in the face of world's most demanding environments.

ALON® is an ideal material for applications requiring high strength light-weight durability and transparency in the face of world's most demanding environments. So "glass" can now be a structural component. Kewl.

Eastern time, so it was just before 7 AM, or about an hour after sunrise.

All glass is very strong. The problem is that it’s brittle and prone to shatter. This is why you temper steel knives, it removes hardness but makes the edge tougher—resistant to chipping.
Hopefully someone out there can explain this more clearly than I, but construction materials have to be tough and resilient.

It could probably do a good job in protecting IRS hard drives.

I always thought that was funny. I love Star Trek, but that was a false problem. They could have used steel walls...

How thick would those steel walls have been, and could it withstand the forces that would exist under FTL conditions? The premise of the movie was that the Klingon ship was almost too small to do what it was required to do.

Thanks All for the Look/Replies. I will get to each one here in a few. I'm in catch up mode from Sunday being interrupted by Kid trying to kill the motor in her truck by overheating it and the ensuing repairs.

LOL! I know a guy at Dell. Years ago they get a call from a lady with her 1st computer saying she can’t get it turned on. So they go run the checklist:
Plugged in? Yes
Both ends? Yes
Did you turn on the switch on the back? !?Switch on the back!? No I’ve been stepping on the Foot pedal. (Think sewing machine)
Mam, that is the Mouse, put that on the desk and on the back of the machine is the Power switch- turn it on.

50,000 cu ft/7.48 cu ft per gal=6684.49 gal*8.34 lb per gal = 55,748.65 lbs
Plus the average weight of a Humpback Whale= between 25 and 40 tons*2=50 - 80 Tons*2000lbs per ton=50,000 - 160,000 lbs.
Total = 105,748.65 - 215,748.65 lbs.
I say it depends on the support structure under the Tank.
Have to call the Manufacturer for the Flex Limits on the sides.
