Make the desktop wider than the physical screen/custom resolution, then slide the icons over to the non displayed area.

Win98 had Guest/Admin privileges, right? I don’t remember. Set yourself up as the admin, and make everyone else a guest.

How about: left-click near the item(s) and slide over and then hold it until the icon(s) is/are selected, then Shift-Delete to remove them permanently? Or is W98 not allowing you to do that somehow?
A bit of time ago, granted, but didn't you also have the ability to right-click on the Win icon in W98 in the menu bar and bring up the Desktop folder? Where you could delete the Shortcut icons?

If you can see the icons in the Desktop folder in Windows Explorer, you might be able to simply right click the icons, cut them, then paste them into a different folder. Sorry but I no longer have a Win98 box to check that.
