I have a stand-up desk at work and love it. Use the kitchen breakfast bar at home as it is about the right height for a laptop for me. Also have a tall table with bar stools that let my legs dangle instead of being at a 90 degree angle. It all helps. I had no trouble adjusting to a standing desk. Unfortunately I go to enough meetings during the day that I spend about 30% of my day sitting plus driving 2 to 2 1/2 hours a day so it really helps to stand when I can.

Well good for you Danny boy. My guess is you are a good forty years younger than I.
I also imagine you don’t have an hereditary problem called advanced degenerative arthritis in your spine, your hips and your knees.
So I am asking you to set your assumptions aside and understand when I spend ten minutes on my feet working at a task a bit at a time, then sit down for thirty minutes or more. I will have to ask you to understand why I have a handicap placard in both our cars, and use a scooter for shopping trips and outings like festivals.
Because I won’t be joining your experiment.

“Sitting is the new smoking”.

In the 1970’s the feminists agitated for a different form of potty parity. They pointed out that men stand to urinate while women sit & this of course was just another component of male dominance that had to be destroyed.

Feminists demanded that urinals be removed from mens’ rooms across the nation. Federal legislation was introduced in Congress under the motto “Number one is all right, but don’t stand for it”. The bill’s sponsors, Edward Kennedy & George McGovern, introduced the bill in the Senate but insisted upon sitting down while they did so.

However, Cong. Bella Abzug had already introduced a bill in the House mandating public facilities that allow women to urinate while standing up; as a result the drive for urinary equality was hopelessly deadlocked, & both bills later died in committee.

The standup desk got popular where I work. Whenever they asked if I wanted one I always gave the same answer: I used to stand for a living, then I went back to college.

Hit wall. Completely f**king dead. Wife rubbed my feet tonight. If Sitting Dan got a foot massage from his wife, he’d thank her. Standing Dan is a whiny a**hole. Email to friend: “If a nun gave me a $100 bill I would be like, screw you, my legs hurt.”

This article is navel-gazing on stilts.

I had desk jobs for 37 years, so I reckon I sat a lot of hours. More than 11 hours every day including time spent watching TV at home. Well...I am in my 70’s now and still alive and kicking. I break 80 all the time on my golf course. I will add that pains in hip joints were beginning when I worked. Now I have more time to exercise and play golf, and all pains have disappeared! The body gives you lot of subtle signs, we has to learn to notice them. All in all, exercise is helping me more than any nutrition regimen or vitamin supplements (which I avoid) could ever would.

I watch salt intake more carefully than my sugar and carbs intake. Too much Salt causes my blood pressure to go higher. That is never good. Sugar I can exercise away. Salt is harder to get rid off.

I haven’t been able to stand for over 15 years ... Although I probably do sit too long in one position without being moved, lying down for extended periods isn’t the best either – you just distribute the pressure sores a little more. Somehow, I don’t think simply being sedentary is going to be the deciding factor (there’s that little thing called Genetics ;P)

I spent 20 years behind a desk working for the National Guard sitting and “babysitting” my email plus doing reports. My weight jumped from 170 to a high of 205. After I retired, I started walking our dog daily and am back at 172.

The new job I started yesterday has me on my feet for the better part of eight hours. My feet hurt a bit yesterday when I got home, but I felt better than any day sitting at my old job.

If God meant for man to stand up for long, he wouldn’t have given him such a nice butt for sitting long hours...or at least he would have cushioned the bottom of our feet like our derrieres.;-)

So Secretaries and other office personnel who work overtime have only three years to live? Sounds wrong to me...I know lots who sat 10-12 hours a day in the military, and they are still here...retired.

Don’t believe everything you hear.

I’m on my feet a major portion of the day....Good shoes are a must...

Buy American..Red Wing Shoes...with support inserts

Compared to them, most if not other shoes are crap...

End of the day your feet will not be killing you...
