NEW YORK (Reuters) - Casey Kasem, host of the "American Top 40" countdown for four decades, remained in critical condition at a Washington state hospital on Sunday and was being treated for an infected bedsore, a hospital spokesman said.
Kasem, who was also the voice of Shaggy in the "Scooby-Doo" cartoons and one of the most recognisable voices on American radio, was admitted to St Anthony Hospital in Gig Harbor last week.
The 82-year-old former DJ has been alert throughout his hospitalisation, receiving wound care, intravenous antibiotic therapy, blood pressure support medication and treatment for his pain, hospital spokesman Scott Thompson said.

I listened to him for many years on “American Top 40”. I always enjoyed hearing his trivia about the singers and groups who were on the pop charts.
This has become such an ugly mess the way his 2nd wife has blocked the children from his 1st marriage from seeing him.
The “70’s” station on Sirius plays his shows on the weekends. Despite what many say, that was a great decade for pop music. Back then, most pop songs were happy and optimistic. Not like the hateful rap and overproduced “disco” that permeates the pop charts today.
I remember listening to him on KRLA in Los Angeles in the mid 1960s before he became a national star.
I agree with you. I have all but stopped listening to radio stations which play today’s hits. I enjoy the ‘70s decades the most, also listen to Sirius 70s for that very reason.
And, of radio stations in my area which play oldies, they have such narrow playlists as to be very repetitious. It’s hard to listen to one station for hours at work, for example, without having to hear songs you have heard a million times before. Sirius 70s plays a lot of the hits from the 70s which just aren’t played on radio today.
This got a lot of air play on KRLA
A Letter from Elaina--Casey Kasem (1964)
Yeah, ‘70’s on 7’ and ‘80’s on 8’. Been a SiriusXM subscriber for ten years. Something for every mood. And I got my Ozzy’s Boneyard and Hair Nation programmed right into the dashboard.
I remember it well. He also used to DJ a lot of local dances that my friends attended and he would mention their names over the radio the following week. I never went to one myself.
I like '50's on 5, even though half the songs they play are from the '60's. Nonetheless, they play a lot of forgotten hits that don't get on the "oldies" playlists, and I especially like programs such as "Pink and Black Days," heard on Saturday nights.
Prayers up for Mr. Kasem. Even if he beats the infection/sepsis from the bed sore, he has a very difficult road ahead of him for the time he has left (due to his Lewy Body Dementia he suffers from).
Prayers that the man knows peace and the love of his family in the days and months ahead.
Greatest DJ along with Wolfman Jack, IMO.
Xm radio rocks.
XM indeed, I still try my best to ignore “Sirius” who brought us the Slimeball Stern and wrecked the best music channels on...or off...the planet. The 60s channel on XM was where “the way it was is the way it is”, and now thanks to Lou Simon, it’s finally getting back to a semblance of what it was before the NYC suits turned it into a crappy oldies show. Sorry, I am NOT your ‘cuzzin’...

I’m not a big fan of cousin brucie but he’s ok. This summer is being locked in to the grateful dead station. Had a lousy school year so I’m clearing my head with background music. I like Deep tracks the most.
For myself its the Grateful Dead Channel when I am working down in the barn. For the mrs. its Bluesville. I went to turn to the 40s station that had been a staple on Xm for years and it had been replaced with Billy Joel yuck....
“He also used to DJ a lot of local dances that my friends attended...”
Reminds me of the DOORS song from “American Prayer”. DJ, TV showman, came to my homeroom party. Hmmm - might even be about Casey Kasem??

The music was new
black polished chrome
And came over the summer
like liquid night.
The DJ’s took pills to stay awake
and play for seven days.
They went to the studio
And someone knew him
Someone knew the TV showman.
He came to our homeroom party
and played records
And when he left in the hot noon sun
and walked to his car
We saw the chooks had written
F-U-C-K on his windshield.
He wiped it off with a rag
and smiling cooly drove away.
He’s rich. Got a big car.
see my post 16
Used to listen to him when he was at KYA and KEWB in Sam Francisco in the ‘50s.
He always struck me as fake. Gene Nelson had him beat by a long shot.
.
^5!
I’m a huge Deep Tracks fan as well.
