(CNN) -- "To eat, or not to eat?" For many people these days, that really is the question.
For the past four decades, we've been told to stay away from red meat, dairy and cheese -- foods high in saturated fats -- because saturated fat is bad for the heart.
But investigative reporter Nina Teicholz says that isn't the case.
"When the dietary recommendations came out in 1961 saying that saturated fat causes heart disease, that was based on total cholesterol," Teicholz said. "But our understanding of heart disease has evolved enormously."
She said the science condemning saturated fats just isn't there. In her new book, "The Big Fat Surprise," Teicholz writes that the low-fat, fruit- and vegetable-filled diet that you thought was healthy doesn't have all the benefits it claims.

America's obesity crisis Dr. Walter Willett, chairman of the department of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health, cautions readers to take her findings with a grain of -- well, not salt.
Your risk for heart disease depends on HDL and LDL cholesterol: good and bad cholesterol. And scientists know, he said, that saturated fat raises unhealthy LDL levels in the blood.

There’s truth to what you heard on the radio.
Unfortunately, moderation alone isn’t enough for diabetics.
The only food science clear to me is: Porterhouse. The filet mignon needs the extra help.
I wonder if the eating guidelines, trying to steer people away from the diets they ate for centuries, are part of the obesity problem.

I have read more than one article expressing such an opinion from a scientist. Apparently, we are eating just too darn much grain and too many complex carbohydrates.
Remember the Food Pyramid that we have been told is the way to go? I read some article within the last few months that proposed that much of the make-up of that guide was pushed by those who stood to make money from selling us the grain-filled products.
I was hospitalized following an accident many years ago. The hospital starved me for four days. I was so hungry that I was begging for food... all they gave me was Jello.
At the time, there were no CAT or PET or MRI scans; the only way to determine if I had internal injuries was to wait and see if I would develop symptoms. The fact that I became hungry was an indicator that I had no internal injuries.
It was not a nice experience.
Gluten free makes sense for people who have celiac disease. But for healthy people to avoid gluten because people with a specific disease cannot eat it makes no sense. It makes as much sense as avoiding sugar because it's bad for diabetics.
Eventually, this fad will pass like most eating fads. A small number of orthorexics will maintain the diet, while the rest of the food faddists move on to something else.
Count me among the scientists.
A lot of these "studies" are designed to turn up correlations, nothing else. Physicians design these studies, uncover correlations, and rush to publish as if the correlation proves anything. Then more correlative studies are performed, showing that the correlation is real. There is nothing wrong with showing a correlation, as long as one understands what a correlation really means (hint: by itself, it does not show causation).
Nothing against physicians, but most of them are not trained in research techniques and do not understand the scientific method.
Sorry about the soapbox. As a scientist, the prevalence of unfounded claims being made on the basis of correlations is a pet peeve of mine.
I suppose to idiots like liberals, rocks, twigs, and leaves are better.
We have dropped margarine and gone back on butter. Cheese and meat? Everyday.
There are four major food groups: Orange, Brown, Green and Off-white.
I dropped margarine years ago, meat, cheese and butter every day! We eat lots of green vegetables too!
I forgot to mention milk! For a couple of old farts we drink a lot, almost 2 gallons a week!
I fry bacon in butter.
That makes perfect sense! :D
