Tom Cruise is returning to theaters soon in "Edge of Tomorrow," so we took the highway to the Honest Trailer Vault and dusted off our vintage trailer for 1986's "Top Gun," Tom Cruise's classic movie about super-manly dudes, Kenny Loggins, and beach volleyball. Oh, and flying planes.

The movie was OK but that opening scene with the music in the background and the planes on deck etc. was memorable in a sort of “Take My Breath Away” way.
A gay lead actor and a lesbian leading lady. Only in Hollywood.
I keep hearing that, but what proof is there that Cruise is gay. I spent some time with him in the early eighties here in Tulsa, and he definitely struck me as straight.
Lesbian or not...she was HOT in that film..and to see her today..well, makes me realize that I’m not so pretty myself in the mirror anymore..
...was memorable in a sort of Take My Breath Away way.
There’s one question the movie left me with that to this day I still haven’t found an answer for:
What the hell is a MiG-28? And why does it look so similar to an F-104?
$cientology is intolerant of gays. That’s why Tom and Travolta can’t come out of the closet.
I think you mean F-5/T-38.
I also am puzzled and perplexed by all the hostility shown on FR toward Cruise. Obviously he's a heterosexual male, obviously he's a fine actor, better than folks give him credit for (ever seen " War of the Worlds"? Or "Tropical Thunder"? No? Didn't think so, Cruise haters.), and obviously he leans toward self reliance and moxy, which in my definition is an essentially "conservative" state of mind.
Yeah, he's a Scientologist, which is pretty bad, but he also had the honesty and guts to call out ol' uber-liberal Drew Barrymore for thinking prescription drugs were the solutions to depression and mental "issues," rather than plain ol' standing up to your demons and facing them down with what the Almighty gave you. The guy's got a lot of sand and takes politically incorrect positions with confident indifference.
Tom Cruise is okay in my book.
Ed Harris and Tom Hanks are very fine actors. But they are both so far held in contempt in my book for their personal corrupt political ideology of championing collectivism, that any new movies they make, I pointedly avoid.
Odly, it makes me think of Berlin. ;-)
And Terri Nunn :-) !
They were F-5E's.
1986 was before advanced CGI. Filming a “Mig-28” would have been VERY expensive, even if they had some Russian planes to use.
That said, remember Fire Fox with Clint Eastwood? I always wondered how they did that. But I haven’t watched it in a while.
The MiG-28 in the movie was actually an F-5.
The shots where the Fire Fox was taking off and landing were done with R/C model airplanes. Larry Wolfe of Jet Hangar Hobbies built and flew the models. He said they flew very poorly. The design looked good on film, but aerodynamically it was a piece of junk.
Funny as heck. I think inception and the matrix are just as good.
Am I correct in perceiving him as a very much a naturally "amped" kind of person? Kind of seething with energy?

They were painted in Soviet Air Force motif, with subdued USAF markings. I read an article about them long ago: the pilots studied Soviet tactics, and tried to emulate them.
The Aggressor Squadron was reactivated in 2005, and fly F-15's now.
And that’s why they can’t leave Scientology. They know all their secrets.
