A Detroit-area man was so determined to get to Michigan from Arizona that he refused to stop and contact authorities after one of his passengers died, police said Wednesday.
The man, a 62-year-old Clinton Township resident, has not been charged and authorities were awaiting toxicology results from an autopsy performed on the body of the 31-year-old woman who died.

My sister in the OSI worked a case where the visiting family of an airman had the family patriarch die while there. (Texas, as I recall.) They went to where the body was and were not stopped or challenged. They had no idea they were doing anything wrong. They loaded the man into the back of a pickup and took him home to lay him out in the family parlor. But along the way they got into a wreck. Nobody was seriously hurt, but there was an extra body...which had been embalmed. Apparently it is illegal to transport a body. But I’ll wager this case was unique. (Timeframe late ‘60’s.)

I think posterchild has it right. It’s a protect the union law. I know to transport a body costs lots, thousands. But if you just fold it over and UPS it...$94.88. (Don’t ask.)
Just in case, they filled out three Chicago absentee ballot requests.
Couldn’t have pulled it off before the Dems morto-voter law.
Here are the circumstances: These men were working in a ship yard during WWII building LST’s. They stayed in a “Man-Camp” during the week and drove home on Friday nights.
Poor guy didn’t make it. Just one of those stories that make up the family lore.
