Facebook killed my high school reunion

Facebook killed my high school reunion .

In a way, the high school reunion is as unashamedly American as apple pie and Chevrolet. Go on — ask your parents if they had one. I’d wager that the majority of them would say that they did, and in fact, they probably retain quite a few memories. Someone was shockingly large; someone was stunningly beautiful; someone had completely fallen off of the wagon. The high school reunion’s primary allure was the possibility — nay, the probability — of a few shockers, coupled with the underlying desire to show up and impress the folks who ragged on you with devilish persistence back in the day. Seeing anyone, let alone someone you once spent a great deal of time with, after a decade of absence is sure to be an interesting occasion.

Unfortunately for this generation, such a spectacle is nearly impossible to still find.

For as wonderful as Facebook is at keeping us connected to souls we’d otherwise lose contact with, it also removes the allure of “catching up.” For friends who refresh the site as frequently as the majority of users, it’s fairly easy to keep track of highlights from all of your friends’ lives. Facebook has made it impossible to see a connected friend 10 years later and feel as if any time has passed. Some would argue that’s a boon, but it single-handedly destroyed my high school reunion.

but nothing is so good as just sitting there

Nothing replaces seeing someone and talking and interacting with them in person.

I’ve been to a lot of reunions. I have a number of single guy friends who have had reunions and didn’t want to go alone. They figured I wouldn’t mind if they wandered off with the former cheerleader and I’d have no problem fending for myself. They’ve been interesting and sort of fun.

Actually, I’ve had helpful women come up to me telling me not to let my date out of my sight because he was dancing with one of those dangerous cheerleaders. LOL

What struck me at these reunions was the tremendous variability in the aging process. Some seemed younger than their age and others looked 25 years older. It also struck me that people always seemed to be having a good time.

Before you ever go to a reunion you need to see the movie ‘Grosse Pointe Blank with John Cusack. One of thefunniest movies I’ve ever seen. Strange and funny.

Generally cross to the other side of the street or just ignore them if I see someone I know.

Why? I knew someone that did this. He was the most friendly antisocial person I'd ever known.

I organized my 20 year reunion in 2009. During that process, I ended up with hundreds of additional Facebook friends. Then, in the years since, I’ve had many of them call me racist and other names due to my opposition to President Obama. One, who happened to be a fellow superlative winner when we were in high school (we were both “Most Dependable”) got extremely upset with me for a comment I made about Rachael Jeantel during the Zimmerman trial. This girl has known me for 25 years and I’ve always hugged her and been nothing short of a gentleman to her, but she told me how racist I was and so I defriended her and decided that I am no longer interested in doing nice things like giving well over a hundred hours of my own time to organize another reunion for classmates who act like that.

I realized before ever getting out of high school that High School never ends just by looking at the people in my town that had graduated the year before or 50 years before.

They were mostly the same people with the same issues that never ever forgot their high school experiences with each other. It was as if they had happened last week instead of 30 years before.

Nope. Wasn’t what I wanted in life. Not who I wanted to become.

Facebook. Don’t go there. I should delete my FR homepage.

I can count on the fingers of one hand the ones I would have any interest at all in ever seeing again.

The only person I went to high school with that I gave a crap about I've been happily married to for the last 27 1/2 years.

Anyone else, meh.

I have had several freepers rag on me for not having an FR homepage. I thought that was funny. One even told me “How do we know if you are who you say you are?” as if I couldn’t lie on an FR homepage.

I thought that was sad.

No, they didn't. Why would they want to? The people they liked they stayed in contact with. The rest....why would they?

I ran into the same stuff after playing Navy for 4 and for some reason of temporary insanity joined the Army NG of my hometown.

It was just like HS again. The unit was going to get decommed and they let go back to the Naval Reserve.

I drive through Carlsbad on my way from El Paso to Roswell and I hate all the red lights in that town! They need to build a bypass around Carlsbad.

The class nerd and jock will always be seen as the class nerd and the class jock as adults. The cheerleaders will still have their cliques regardless of what age and gravity did to them. the stoners will always be the stoners, the drunks the drunks and the rest. None of it changes and no one ever forgets who got caught doing what with whom, when.

It is why so many places are so dysfunctional. Many people stay stuck in that mindset and treat each other accordingly. It’s like a self fulfilling prophecy.

Out of all 22 of us anyone I cared to see I kept in touch with. All 3 of them. The rest, I don’t care enough to spend thousands of dollars to go visit.

Opposite on my class of 1978 situation. Facebook has kept a lot more people in contact, and we get together with more frequency. Social media at its finest.

I was Class of 1974 but just found out I lacked a credit hour which I just now completed. So I will attend my 5 year reunion in 2019 at age 62.

Should be some hot babes there
