With two major cave-ins in the past few weeks, Microsoft is screaming at the top of its lungs about how irrelevant it is. If you didnt understand the fall of Microsoft from powerful monopolist to computing afterthought, let SemiAccurate explain it to you.
For the past few decades, Microsoft has been a monopoly with one game plan, leverage what they have to exclude competition. If someone had a good idea, Microsoft would come out with a barely functional copy, give it away, and shut out the income stream of the innovator. Novell, Netscape, Pen, and countless others were crushed by this one dirty trick, and the hardware world bowed to Redmonds whims.
The company sucked the life and innovation out of the industry for so long that eventually no one innovated because it was pointless, if the idea was good, Microsoft would end it. Ask Gateway about doing something as basic as making the initial desktop and installation process more user-friendly. Microsoft killed them for the sin of trying to make the user experience better. Everything stagnated as a result of this misuse of monopoly power.
As their marketshare grew to almost 100% of the PC market, Microsoft had to move into new areas for growth. There really wasnt a new area large enough after Windows and Office to generate the revenues necessary to keep Wall Streets desire for more sated so Microsoft did what they always do, leveraged their monopoly to extract more and more revenue from each customer.

“Microsoft is now irrelevant to computing, and they want you to know it”
Just like the Tea Party. /s
Another day, another Linux or Apple nutbag blowing a gasket about MS.
Microsoft: Going out of business since 1990
“Microsoft released a patch, they erased that line in the sand and drew another one immediately after the patch was released.”
Cool, let’s call it obozoSoft.
I predicted this many moons ago. Not because I have a hard on for Microsoft, hell I bless what I have been able to accomplish via their software, but because of their my way or the highwAY position and the historical nature of same.
AMD is dropping the cost of computing with this Kabini:

More options than I can post ....new one from Pioneer:

If you have access to parts you can beat that.,...
There is an ITX motherboard that has a plugin to use a laptop power supply brick.
Any time I see one of these threads, about the only thing I can say is: why would I take tech advice from someone so stupid he pays twice as much for hardware just because it has a picture of a fruit on it?
Oh, and Unix: the next consumer operating system since 1984 (and Linux hasn't made that any more likely.)
I run windows 2000 in a virtual box on my iMac. Works great! Very zippy. Can’t remember the last time I fired it up though.
get a steam account. valve is doing wonders for linux games.

What would you except from a bunch of liberals? Hypocrites.

This article is hilarious, it will go on the trash heap of hundreds of other similar articles that proclaimed Microsoft dead or irrelevant.
In the first breath it claims that Microsoft single handedly strangled the market, kept innovation dead and held the marketplace in the dark ages so it could rule over it like a tyrant. Then in the next breath it explains how PlayStation and Google are kicking major ass and blowing everything MS does away. Which is it???
Microsoft isn’t going anywhere... I think they have made missteps but in some cases they are far ahead of google.
Cordova Takes Visual Studio Cross-Platform

He didn’t mention Zune! ;-)
Good riddance.
Microsoft may have lost ground in some areas, but it is still number one in its core interests and it is far more diverse in technological areas than most of its competitors.
You do know that you can post more than 10 words in a thread, don't you?

As more and more FReepers (old and new alike) post articles, they really need to pay attention to what they are doing. I know there is a need to excerpt many articles, but remember - you have up to 300 words or no more than 1/2 of the article if it is less than 300 words.
May I make some basic suggestions when excerpting? In addition to the above mentioned FR guidelines, please copy and paste the "who-what-when..." of the article. Earlier today, someone posted an article about a student getting arrested at school for an item found in his equipment bag. The FReeper failed at excerpting and did not even mention what that item was. Was that due to rudeness or laziness? I don't know.
Use snips if you need to. Oftentimes relevant and important info is found deep inside the article. Or maybe at the end. Post that, if you please.
Will be setting up an Ubuntu box soon.
I make a living off integrating Microsoft solutions (servers, cloud, etc). So not sure they’re irrelevant. But they did have a monopoly on things for too long and it hurt innovation.
I’ve been looking at Windows phones. The one I want is the 1020 with the 41 mp camera, but only ATT has it, and I’m not going to ATT. Now they have a new lineup, but the flagship 5” will only be available in Europe. I just don’t understand their strategy. Now I’m looking away from the phones and toward a tablet.
