Top 5 Most Overrated Athletes

It’s difficult to judge an athlete’s true worth, even if on paper it’s clear they’re either a mega-loser or a mega-winner. But once you go beyond the stats and sabermetrics, and really take a look at what they’ve done, you inch a little closer to uncovering their true value.

In the cases of these five, we found a whole lot of nothing. These are some of the most overrated performers we’ve ever seen, and they should probably pay back all the money they’ve earned and go work at a Walgreens or something. Or CVS, if they prefer. We’re not picky.

5. Wilt Chamberlain

...

Unfortunately, outside of a plethora of women’s phone numbers, he rarely won anything significant. In basketball, the ultimate team sport, Wilt was seen as a bad teammate, somebody who cared more about HIS shots and HIS stats than helping his team win rings. He won two titles, though given his gaudy numbers, plus the fact that his teams made the playoffs every single year he played save one, he really should’ve won more.

...

4. Danica Patrick

...

Here’s the issue: she’s never won. It’s not just that she’s never won a Sprint Cup — plenty of people have never done that. It’s more that, with the exception of ONE RACE back in 2008, she’s never won anything. She’s started over 230 races and won one. She rarely even finishes in the top ten. For somebody touted as a super-duper star, that’s pretty pathetic.

...

3. Deion Sanders

...

2. Dennis Rodman

...

1. Alex Rodriguez

...

really?

I'd say yup, based on that 3rd column. And as far as regular season, the man is developing a rep as a choke artist when it matters.

On the other hand the man has dated maybe the two best looking women ever (Simpson and Underwood). I'll hand him that.

I remember a headline a few years ago. “Danica Patrick ALMOST wind Indy 500”.

LOL. Or to put it another way, he helped take his team to the playoffs every year but one, and led them to two titles. As noted, it’s a team sport, one guy can’t do it all. Any team would have loved to have Wilt.

Purely unqualified opinion on the part of the writer. Every one of these athlets and those who were obviously ignored, made an impact on their sport and any attempt to demean their accomplishments is made soley by those who have never achieved even a fraction of the expertise required by these individuals........

Articles such as this are BS and are written by self absorbed so called "journalists" who have never accomplished anything in their life.......

I remember Dan Wheldon appearing on Letterman wearing a t-shirt that read “I actually won the Indy 500”.

Well they’re “good” in that they’re better than we are. But the grade is on a curve, they’re pros so we know they’re that good, but now within THAT subset has anybody actually declared her good? Not that I’ve seen, in general she’s lumped in talent wise with the dramatically less famous also rans, which matches her win level. If she wasn’t a hottie she’d be one of those faceless drivers people only mention when their accident takes out one of the contenders.

Danica Patrick is Five Feet 2 inches tall.

I’m sorry, I don’t find short women attractive. Just my personal opinion.

Unless she has 5w30 flowing through her veins, Danica Patrick is not an athlete.

Tony Romo...end of story

Uhhh no. Overrated by whom? Everyone craps on the guy despite being one of the top rated passers of all time. To be overrated one must get praised more than their actual talent. Romo gets dumped on far more than he gets praised.

Chamberlain was a great athlete. He used his physique to full advantage. Except for Russell occasionally he was unstoppable in the nba. The key was widened because of his college career.

He was known in volleyball circles as a world class competitor.

At age 50 scouts commented that he could be a starter in the nba.

The author doesnt know of which he speaks.

I’m no A Rod fan, but he isn’t as overrated as D Patrick, Deion Sanders, or especially Rodman. There are plenty more overrated than A Rod. Of course he is a likely steroid abuser, but he’s not the only one.

BTW, when did someone driving a car fast become “an athlete?”

Have you ever driven one if those cars at somewhere around 200 mph ... for 500 miles?

I've done a few laps at 160. No way would i last 500 miles at top speed. Maybe that's not what you would call an athlete, but it certainly takes a lot of physical work to do what they do.
