Top 5 Most Overrated Athletes

It’s difficult to judge an athlete’s true worth, even if on paper it’s clear they’re either a mega-loser or a mega-winner. But once you go beyond the stats and sabermetrics, and really take a look at what they’ve done, you inch a little closer to uncovering their true value.

In the cases of these five, we found a whole lot of nothing. These are some of the most overrated performers we’ve ever seen, and they should probably pay back all the money they’ve earned and go work at a Walgreens or something. Or CVS, if they prefer. We’re not picky.

5. Wilt Chamberlain

...

Unfortunately, outside of a plethora of women’s phone numbers, he rarely won anything significant. In basketball, the ultimate team sport, Wilt was seen as a bad teammate, somebody who cared more about HIS shots and HIS stats than helping his team win rings. He won two titles, though given his gaudy numbers, plus the fact that his teams made the playoffs every single year he played save one, he really should’ve won more.

...

4. Danica Patrick

...

Here’s the issue: she’s never won. It’s not just that she’s never won a Sprint Cup — plenty of people have never done that. It’s more that, with the exception of ONE RACE back in 2008, she’s never won anything. She’s started over 230 races and won one. She rarely even finishes in the top ten. For somebody touted as a super-duper star, that’s pretty pathetic.

...

3. Deion Sanders

...

2. Dennis Rodman

...

1. Alex Rodriguez

...

So many issues on this. Basketball isn’t the ultimate team sport, that’s either hockey or football (I vote hockey because your star offensive players are only on the ice 1/3 of the game). But I’m not really sure how you can say a guy that made the playoffs all but one year of his career was bad. And as for whining that he’d shoot rather than pass for the final shot I sure hope this writer wasn’t one of the ones that constantly harped on LeBron for constantly passing instead of shooting. Part of being a star basketball player is you TAKE that final shot.

Has anybody ever actually claimed Danica Patrick is good? Can’t really be overrated when nobody says your good. She’s poster bait, and good for ratings.

As for Deion he’s completely ignoring the fact that Deion was a fantastic cornerback, and a very good kick returner, and a pretty damn good receiver. Yeah OK he was mediocre at baseball, but to do that AND be a 3 way player in football is pretty impressive.

I’m not really sure anybody says Rodman was very good. His real claim to fame on the court was courage, to be a great rebounder (which he was) is all about being willing to do it. You’re going to take a lot of elbows in the face which most players shy away from, especially as their career advances, Rodman never shied away. Everybody at the time was pretty honest about the fact that Rodman couldn’t shoot, or do much of anything else, but he had guts, which is all anybody needed from him.

Five years ago A-Rod was a valid entry on this list. But now nobody really thinks he was good, which again makes it hard to say he’s overrated.

And when he was in Detroit, he showed no signs of the freak he would later become.

Who was the quarterback of the Eagles who threw up under pressure and RUSH used to say how the media cheered for him, which got RUSH kicked off ESPN.

Rodman was one of the best rebounders ever to play the game and Sanders shut down an entire side of the field with his coverage!

Sanders was so good, the Cowboys mortgaged their future to get him to squeeze one more SB out of Aikman-Smith-Irvin.

Disagree strongly on Chamberlain and would add Shaquille O’Neal to that list way before Wilt. Name the best big man O’Neal had to play against. Now, think about who Chamberlain played against. Bill Russell, Nate Thurmond, Zelmo Beatty, Bob Lanier, Walt Bellamy, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Willis Reed, Dave Cowens. I probably left some out. Back then, it seemed like every NBA team had a good big man. Not so for Shaq.

End especially in Philly, Wilt had garbage around him, and single-handedly made them competitive.

I didn’t like the idea of seeing Prince Fielder leave the Tigers but the team is actually stronger without him. The Tigers have already stolen as many bases this year as they stole all of last year and Fielder was never going to steal a base unless there was a doughnut hidden under it.
