For LGBT teenagers, burgeoning sexual identity and alcohol mix in powerful and unhealthy ways, a U.S. study suggests.
Presenting the study at the Pediatric Academic Societies annual meeting in Vancouver, early in May, researchers say theyve found binge drinking among gay and lesbian youth may be caused by chronic stress associated with societal stigmas.
The U.S. study, by the a team at the Childrens Hospital in Los Angeles in conjunction with the University of Southern Californias School of Social Work, looked at the responses of more than 1,000 gay- and lesbian-identified youth in an online survey.
The survey of gay and lesbian youth between the ages of 12 to 18 was aimed at uncovering factors that make them more likely to engage in binge drinking than their heterosexual peers.
Lead author Dr. Sheree M. Schrager, the Director of Hospital Medicine Research at the Childrens Hospital, worked with USC assistant professor Jeremy Goldbach to figure out the way the results fit the theory of minority stress.

how bout b/c they know they’re doing something wrong? that’s pretty stressful.
Well la-de-frickin-da as Chris Farley might say. I have white male advantage guilt syndrome. That’s reason enough for me to drink.
A study has found that the LGBT community is being inundated with a tsunami of requests for participation in various polls and studies. Experts suggest that the current "hip" status of gays and lesbians (not to mention transsexuals and other assorted freaks) has increased their status among sociologists and statisticians aching for new sources of grant money.
A member of the LGBT community is now twice as likely to be asked to participate in a survey than a typical heterosexual, experts claim. This is resulting in increased "test" anxiety and deeper depression when LGBT community members realize that their efforts to get on the "No Call" list are just as fruitless as those of the heterosexual cohort.
Blame the straight people.
they need their own country
Maybe they need to get tanked in order to screw up the courage to perform disgusting acts.
What social stigma? They’re on top of the world right now!
They used to call it a hedonistic lifestyle.
However, finding out you’ve messed up your life with aids and other diseases makes you drink and do drugs too.
Sort of like the way prostitutes do.
See, it’s all our fault.
For REAL? I usually don’t answer the phone if I don’t know the number calling. If I am curious and do answer, I never have a problem just saying “Not interested.” Then I politely hang up. Grow up, Folks!
How about this? The binge drinking and drug abuse are symptoms of the same syndrome as is their homosexuality - namely: lack of impulse control, inability to defer gratification and excessive need for stimulation.
They are wired - differently, to put it politely.
The authors of the new US study can go shove it. These kids have a conscience and they are simply trying to sear it. Current social mores favor them no matter what the behavior so . . . what the heck.
Pity them. This is it for all these deluded children.
What social stigma???!!! This is friggin’ ridiculous! They are absolutely immune from ANY criticism. There is no social stigma! The stigma is for those who call them what they really are!
Well, if I were some freak who derived arousal from some dude’s hairy posterior and his accompanying excrement-filled colon, I’d drink myself to oblivion too.
...and of course, the straight kids are just sober little angels. Haha. Yeah, right.
Great minds think alike (see my post at 14). I believe lack if impulse control is a big part of it but an excessive craving for stimulation is part of it too.
I believe it is an illness. Some autism spectrum suffers have similar issues, but they manifest differently.
It’s your fault they’re drunks America.
Aren’t you ashamed of yourselves?
