The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
That’s great.
I transplanted a few pepper plants into the garden yesterday, and spent some quality time with Nanner working in the pond. It's hard to tell from the picture, but the elevation where the pump is laying is close to five feet below the original level of the pond basin.
Goal for the weekend will be to get the rest of the peppers and the tomato plants into the dirt.
I planted mine 3 weeks ago. Still haven’t broke the soil.
Thanks.
I know I posted a bit earlier than she does, but thought that some who read FR from work may see it for the first time.
Glad it’s finally springing in Michigan, and raining too.
Excellent idea!
I’m a lurker on this thread, because I remember fondly when my family had a garden..wished I had had the time & energy to have one when I was younger. Now my disabilities totally prevent me from doing just about anything.
Question: Can someone please tell me the name of the tomato I should buy in the store that is the sweetest tasting at this time of year? I live in the Fox Lake, IL region. Many thanks.
All I know about artichokes is they are great marinated or stuffed. I know, that’s not what you wanted to know. :)
Maybe after we get some expert replies, I will be motivated to fill the empty space in our garden with some.
Sorry to hear about your disabilities, I understand completely. I dont get around very good myself.
Several people on here grow tomatos in containers, is that something you could do?
I got that message, too, and figured one of you would put it up. rightly, you did it and it’s here, excellent.
No.Va.... Will start putting stuff in the ground tomorrow; garden gets only limited sun light. Ruby cabbage and cucs first; peppers Wednesday; tomatoes Friday ; then my experiment for the summer: baby butternut squash and Trombetta squash.
It’s that much more gardening talk time!
I put in plants that I found at the local nursery. I’m going too talk to them about the plants when I’m there tomorrow.
We love them, which is why we’re trying them. They “can” be perennial here, but are normally treated as an annual - I’m going too try to them, and see if I can overwinter them. I’m going to get another one and put it in a pot that can be brought indoors.
They’re this year’s big experiment for me - husband now wants chickens........
Not even a sprinkle at my house.
It was so light I was able to stay outside in it while watering the dogs. It did not even make a crust on the sand.
My wife wants chickens, but they are not allowed in our neighborhood.
Went way over budget with gardening supplies this month. I had to buy garden soil for my raised beds and planters. My backyard is clay and nothing would grow in that. I grew some things, squash, peppers, lettuce, eggplant, beans, and zucchini from seeds but bought tomato plants. I must confess I spent a lot of the budget on flowers. I like to mix the flowers and the vegetables in the backyard.
So far 2 of my cherry tomatoes are loaded with fruit, my squash and eggplant have blossoms and I have one tiny pepper. Lettuce is doing great on the covered back porch.
I’ve been vacuuming the oak tree stuff and related gold dust from our screened porch and front porch area today. We had a good rain yesterday and washed a lot of this stuff out of the air. The oaks out class and out dump the cedars. Cedars really make me sneeze.
