There could be a rather large cat fight on the horizon. Nestle Purina PetCare is suing rival Blue Buffalo alleging the company is lying about the natural ingredients in its pet food.
St. Louis-based Purina filed a lawsuit [PDF] in federal court Tuesday accusing Blue Buffalo of false advertising, disparagement and unjust enrichment.
Purina, the maker of brands like Beneful and Friskies, claims that Blue Buffalo’s ads stating its products contain “only the finest natural ingredients” and “no chicken or poultry byproduct meals” are false and violate the Federal Lanham Act.
“This is not an action we take lightly,” Steven Crimmins, Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer of Nestlé Purina, says in a statement. “We believe consumers deserve honesty when it comes to the ingredients in the food they choose to feed their pets.”

Have to look into this. My 10 year old maltese mix has only eaten Blue lamb & brown rice since he was 6 months old. Since he is only 10 lbs I wanted to find the best dog food I could give him and wanted to stay away from poultry. He is in excellent health, still has the abilities of a puppy and has never been sick. No signs of arthritis. I will stick with Blue and will look for their response.
My 13 year old labradoodle decided to catch and eat 2 live squirrels at the doggy park a couple of weeks ago—don’t know why. We’ve been going to that park nearly every day of her life, and she’s never paid any attention to the squirrels.
Anyway, it sure scared me, and I called the vet right away. He wasn’t unduly perturbed, just told me to watch her for a couple of days, and if any problems developed, to call him back.
Long story short—she’s fine. However, she probably ate some “by-products” that day.
Don’t really care what my pooch eats as long as every ingredient is made in America.
Want the real best? If you live in the mid west, look at this. My daughter loves it for her dogs.

I'm not sure of the accuracy of their ratings. Still, it's an informative site regarding dog food.
We feed our 9 year old lab BB. It is the only thing we’ve found that doesn’t make her puke. Yeah, we were graced with a dog with a glass stomach. ;-/ Therefore it doesn’t really matter what the advertising says, what Purina does. But it will be mildly interesting to see how BB handles this.
I switched from a Purina brand to Blue and the difference in my dogs overall health and appearance is amazing.
My Jack Russell was having seizures. ..no rhyhm or reason when or why. We switched her to BB and it was night and day. She has never had another seizure and that was almost 10 years ago. Every cat and dog in our house is fed BB. I can’t complain

All humans have their preferences for their pets, I suppose. I decided that since Purina has been in the animal chow business for a hundred and some years, they must know what they are doing. And it was what my grandparents and great grands used on their farms, so that’s my choice for my dogs. They are happy and healthy, so I will stick with it. YMMV
Purina One chicken & brown rice (canned) - that’s what my small dogs get. 1st ingredient is chicken, 2nd ingredient is chicken broth; no corn meal

My 20-month old Akita is on Purina One lamb and rice kibble and eats a can and a half of Alpo/day. No problems. He gets some rice mixed into the wet food and some of whatever meat entree we are having. Some days he gets mackerel instead of Alpo. An egg 2x/week and the only *treat* he will eat are Beneful Hugs. He gets 2 of those a day.
He also steals any unattended black coffee and we really have to keep him away from red wine. He likes deer turds, too.
Dogs are omnivores. What they will eat in the wild would gross out most owners.
He’s healthy and fine.

Yes—I always look for the made in America label.
My vet, told me to feed my cats either Hills or BB. All I can tell you is both of them would vomit food or hairballs if I switched to other labels
I only fed Hills
They also liked chicken hearts and liver which I made for them lovingly. My butcher would always give that stuff to me on the house.
