Rescue Cat Watches Over Diabetic Girl

When the Jansa Family adopted a small rescue cat, Pretty Pippa, from the RSPCA in Kent, UK, they never dreamed the kitty would save the life of the family’s 8-year-old daughter, Mia – over and over again.

Mia has type-one diabetes, which requires her to constantly monitor her blood sugar levels.

Incredibly, the little black and white rescue cat has a special ability: Pippa can detect when Mia’s blood sugar drops and the girl goes into a hypoglycemic episode.

According to the RSPCA, Pippa first demonstrated her gift when she woke Mia up in the middle of night as she was suffering from a hypoglycemic episode. Nighttime can be particularly dangerous because Mia is asleep and doesn’t realize her blood sugar is dropping.

At first, the family thought the cat’s intervention was simply good timing. But one night, Mia’s door was shut, so Pippa went into her parents’ room, meowing loudly and walking on them to wake them up. They went to check on Mia and realized the cat had been trying to alert them that Mia was in danger.

Since then, Mia’s mom Laura says Pippa has alerted them to the girl’s nighttime blood sugar level drops at least 20 times.

Beth Hixson, manager at the RSPCA, says Pippa was abandoned outside a shop and the staff realized quickly how sweet-natured the cat is. “But I couldn’t believe it when I heard how she is helping Mia. I got goosebumps, it’s so amazing.”

The family is working with Mia’s doctors to stop her night episodes but in the meantime, Pippa gives Mia and her family great peace of mind.

“I sleep a bit easier knowing that Pippa is around. It is so nice to have the back-up, it’s really reassuring and certainly a bonus we were not expecting.”

“Mia calls her ‘my special cat, my little protector’ and she’s got a soft spot for her,” Laura says.

Pic of feline and hoomin at source.

Patients in diabetic ketoacidosis often smell of acetone. Donuts to dollars that's what Pippa is detecting.

This article made my day/night today. This cat is a hero to me. Plus made me feel better after reading what had happened in NYC when there was a cat that was kicked in this news article via the NY Daily News. It got me upset. I volunteer at a local cat no-kill shelter in the hometown I live in.

Here is the article:

I heard about that atrocity - didn’t ping it because it’s such a downer. Very glad the creep has been caught, and may G-d grant him justice.

That is the most evil, disgusting thing I’ve ever seen someone do to an innocent and friendly cat.

No one has seen the cat since. He probably crawled away to die. That’s what they do when they
know it’s the end.

And then there is the usual denial by the mother, he’s a nice boy, a good boy who loves his pets...
Idiot. Your son is a monster, madam, with a long arrest record. What did you raise up? Did you
always make stupid excuses for his criminal behavior?

I’d like to see this guy get gut punted 20 feet and see how he feels about its happening to him.

Cats and dogs are definitely on this Earth for a reason.

Cat hair blurred the screen there, for a while.

God has a special place for people like him. I believe in Karma. It is multiplied when the innocents are the victims. That applies to children AND animals.

It's pretty amazing Pippa knows that particular smell means harm for Mia, and that she (Pippa) has to go get help. I say it again---I believe the minds of God's little creatures go deeper and wider than we know.

I can’t watch the clip. Just can’t. But I’d like to be the one to dispense some justice to the POS.

Yes. Okay. I’m coming with you, with a few burly friends of mine, some rope, and some matches.

I’m very happy to hear that King is going to be given medical
attention and adopted out to a good home.

I wish there were some way to contact the “local ASPCA,” for I
would pay for King’s expenses and have him shipped here to me.

He would certainly never get kicked again, I can tell you that.
