People walking along Michigan Avenue on Wednesday said it will affect a range of habits, such as how they pick up after their dogs and line the trash cans in their bathrooms. Maiwand Mayar, 22, said that he uses them to transport his laundry and, like “anyone in every society,” his trash can. He couldn’t immediately think of how he would replace them.

The taxpayer-paid, public servants seem to have a thing against plastic bags. As the kids might say, that’s “gay” AND “retarded”. I think it’s because of excessive use of “recreational” drugs.
For the energy it takes to recycle one paper bag, 84 plastic bags can be recycled instead. Paper bags also take up 7 times the landfill space as plastic. Ban those plastic bags. There is one in my tree. Been there nearly a year. I pack from the cart to a box in my car then carry it in when I get home. Easy! The reusable tote bags are no good as far as I’m concerned.

They did this in Austin in March of 2013. I don’t see any infringement on my personal liberty. It is about 99% of a non-issue. We just make sure we have bags before we leave the car (we keep them in the trunk). I haven’t paid for a new bag in 8 months.
Personally I’d like to see a $250 fine for dropping cigarette butts on the ground. I get tired of seeing those disgusting things everywhere.
How about I shop outside of Chicago?
What are old people going to do. Plastic bags are easy to deal with, paper bags, not so much. A lot more unwieldy, and larger. Old people are screwed. They can’t carry large paper bags or reusable cloth bags easily. And cloth bags are breeding grounds for bacteria.
Why can’t an entrepreneur sell plastic bags on line? Make ‘em with a digital printer thingy.

As you pointed out, reusing paper or cloth bags is a health hazard. It has been documented that the reuse of these bags when food shopping has led to some deaths from contaminated food. The bacteria collected in these bags will lead to serious health problems if the food you are going to eat comes in contact with it, as they surely will. It is much healthier to use plastic bags.
Bingo. There is no way I’d use the cloth bags.....too much chance for cross contamination.

I bought 1000 bags for $25 on Amazon. I use them for my dogs and shopping - no problem. I might be getting looks from the holier-than-thou at the super market. I am oblivious.
Well said. The communists in the Austin city counsel banned the bags and most of the businesses have switched to the old style paper sacks with the you’ve-got-to-be-kidding-me handles glued to the top. Same trash, different format - except for the businesses that force me to bring my own sacks to which I respond by taking my business to neighboring towns and therefore increasing my use of fossil fuels.
It is also worth noting that the number of 20 items or less lanes have expanded and the number of full service lanes have shrunk at our local grocery store, so my family is not alone in its refusal to tote our own sacks.
And those reusable grocery bags...yuk. Some of them that people are using trip after trip are really starting to look moldy. I am certain some people are not washing them like they should and they’re are being touched by the baggers who are in turn touching the purchases of everyone in line behind them. The germs left by spoiled meat residue and unwashed fruit can really make you sick.
I have no idea what the Clown Counsel thinks they’ve accomplished, but at least once every few months they find some way to keep us updated on the local news about how wonderfully everyone has adapted to the new bag ban and how great it is for the environment. It’s their regular Kum Ba Yah moment which is a bunch of feel good hogwash that only the self absorbed liberals feel good about.
The rest of us just feel like we had a decision forced on us that we did not agree with by 7 people with way too much power.
Gee. I don’t know how my grandmother got by for so long without plastic bags. She didn’t drive. She would walk the mile or two to the grocery store and then purchase what she wanted for the day. Then she would carry her paper sack full of groceries home. It kept her in good physical condition. If she needed more than one bag of groceries, she waited for my aunt to take her shopping. I always loved walking with her because the street between her house and the grocery was so interesting. Great men had lived there and had helped to shape the country into the super power it became. But those men lived in times in which the government did not regulate what bags people could use. And government did not declare all kinds of plants illegal. And everything these men did was about coming up with solutions to puzzles. And my little ole 8th grade educated grandmother made sure I learned about these great men and their dreams and hard work.
Sorry to get carried away with my nostalgia. :-)
What did old people do before the introduction of plastic bags? Paper bags have been around a whole lot longer. Most city folks, young and old, use shopping carts to transport their groceries.
