A Serious Question
Self | Self

Posted on 04/22/2014 9:01:43 AM PDT by Gay State Conservative

Just wondering...many websites,it seems, allow posters to amend their posts after hitting "submit".I know FR offers the spell check feature (which is great) but why not offer an "amend" feature as well? Not being a web designer I don't have the first clue how difficult,or expensive,it is to install and maintain such a feature. If it *is* difficult and/or expensive that's surely a good reason not to do it.But if,by chance,it's not...why not give it a try? If that happens I know that some of *my* posts will be more coherent.

Normally called an “edit” function, and I would like to see it on FR….I have no idea how much of a tech challange it would be at this point.

It would be nice as I fat finger things all the time. But then history gets rewritten. Which is why I think JR does not allow it.

I would rather posters here live by the words they choose to write. I would rather we actually review what we write BEFORE we hit post.

Let my ramblings remain, warts and all.

The original purpose of FR was to freeze the Presstitutes’ words in place, because they made secret edits to their stories when they get in trouble. It would be rather hypocritical for us to edit our posts when we hold the Lamestreamers to their words.

Even if it only allowed strike-through and insertion, in order to preserve the context of subsequent comments, it would be very welcome.

Another simple (?) feature would be a double post detector/preventer.

Yes,I've heard that argument made. However, the sites with which *I'm* familiar note that a post has been edited and when it was done.So if someone here accidentally posts that another Freeper is a dirty stinker he/she can catch the error and fix it to read "you're *not* a dirty stinker. And if the offended person replies angrily he/she can then realize the original post was an error.

Exactly….and not only do the time and dates of edits appear, but if anyone quoted them - that language does not change.

Many other sites with an edit feature have a limited window during which you can edit your post.

But then nothing stops the changing of posts of consequence. And the original statement is gone.

Think if the Dan Rather post had been changed/erased (not that it would have been but for example). and in its place “Post edited”.

I guess it would be too easy to say one thing and then change it and say, “I didn’t say that”

I prefer it the way it is now. Yes, there have been times I wished I could’ve pulled back a mistake. But I think it just makes me more careful ( even though I still make mistakes). But the big benefit is both you and your sparring partner are 100% committed to the words you say. You can’t slander somebody then quick take it back. And if you make a mistake, you can always issue an amendatory post as followup. I know there are various compromise schemes, but this is certainly easy for the FR team to maintain, and it serves the intended purpose as is.

I would like that very much. I write articles on a prepper website and after I post, I have a short amount of time, as in a few minutes, to go back and fix something wrong I spotted after it posted. After that period of time passes, if I see something wrong, I can alert a moderator and she changes what I need changed.

The changes of those articles are not changes of opinion in that case, but changes I think are critical to the meaning of what I posted or grammatical changes. They are not huge changes, but important, and a moderator there has never failed to make those slight changes for me if it is past those few minutes I have to change it myself.

Once on this website, I accidentally hit the wrong button and a private message went on the thread. I panicked because I couldn't take that off and a moderator did take it off but I would have liked to have had the option to do it myself immediately.

Then they wouldn’t be “secret.” Some places add the word “edited” to the posts.

That is what the moderators are for.

If there is serious error of fact or inappropriate language, threats etc. they will pull the post. If you misspell something and need to change the title of your post if you ask real nice the mods might do it for you.

If I make an error in my posts, I will simply make another post to my original post with just the error correction in it.
