How many stars are in the solar system?

I got this email from a relative. Scary how uneducated some "educated" people are. These are middle class 30s people with good jobs, a mix of high school and college graduates.

I was at my friend’s house last night and there were a bunch of people over.

It was really nice out so we stayed outside most of the time. When the stars started to appear I used an app on my phone that lets you look up in the sky and it identifies what stars/planets/constellations you’re aiming the phone at.

One thing lead to another and a person made a comment about “all the stars in our solar system”. I said there was only one star and that there were hundreds of billions of stars in our galaxy. She was completely confused.

So I went around and asked people “how many stars in our solar system” – not a single person answered ONE.

And one tried to convince me that the sun revolves around the earth. She started to get angry when I kept disagreeing with her and she told me that just because that’s what science says doesn’t mean it’s true.

So this morning I went into work and asked everyone at work how many stars are in our solar system – I got a bunch of “you’ve got to be kidding me, I don’t know” or “Hmmm… 15?”

And someone even said “the sun isn’t a star”.

I’m just completely speechless!

I am a child of the Apollo program, so I am bewildered by people who simply aren’t interested.

I heard someone had posted something similar on facebook. Some arrogant preteen commented the sun isn’t a star.

“A sun is a sun and a star is a star. The sun isn’t a star.”

Clark originally had the event happening on Saturn. In Arthur’s story, Dave ‘fell’ into Iapetus, which orbits Saturn. Iapetus is the moon with a ‘seam’ of three ridges running completely around the circumference of the object.

One Calorie is about 4,000 BTU.
One calorie is about 4 BTU

The folks at parties might know that one pound of fat equals about 3,500 Calories!

(did I get my decimals correct?)

Want real fun? Discuss moon phases, like why there are moon phases and what causes them.

One fun thing to do if conditions are right (standing in sunlight with a crescent moon in the sky), hold up an orange next to the moon, it will be exactly the same phase!

I ran across an author who wrote dramatically that “the full Moon rose at midnight...” and could not understand that that can’t happen.

For more fun, August 21 2017 there will be a total solar eclipse in the USA. If you get a really ignorant person, you may be able to convince them that if they sign their car title over to you, you’ll bring back the sun (you gotta get this done quickly, though).

You're definitely my "go-to" guy on Arthur Clark novels. I'm only good for recalling bit pieces from the two movies.

I'll be looking for 2001 & 2010 on Blu-Ray, now that we have a new TV.

Marketing people are just as removed from reality as politicians.

I think it all started when Han Solo said he could make the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs. A whole panoply of morons let that one get on the screen.

The really scary thing is: these people vote.

The last presidential election convinced me the country is full of idiots. I hated to admit I was part of a minority in this country. I didn’t admit that I was wrong, just that I was in the minority. It is hard to overcome stupidity.

There was a sci fi story in the fifties which had an ‘astronaut’ finding a huge face on Mars and climbing it he fell into the right eye socket. In the twenties, Tesla and friends received signals from Mars and even had a primitive printer hooked up to a radio telescope which rendered dot-matrix imagery and sequences.

First day in my college Astronomy class, a girl asked “Are there any stars between the earth and the moon?”

Only the ones circling your head, my dear.

I knew at that point that no matter what, I was not going to get the lowest grade in the class.

In Mel Gibson's otherwise excellent movie Apocalypto, the protagonist escapes being sacrificed during the chaos brought on by a solar eclipse. That night, he flees his pursuers through a jungle lit by a full moon...

In the interest of furthering education, please, spell led correctly. Please!

Now, what's the name of that app? I used to just call my brother, an astro-photographer, and he'd tell me what I was looking at. I miss him every day, but mostly at night, when the stars put on their show.
