Need help with math problem
Posted on 04/15/2014 3:31:11 PM PDT by ru4liberty
Don't laugh at us old folk. Our data bases are full, so we can't retain what we don't use like we once could.
My friend and I need some help from some of you mathematically inclined FReepers.
Problem:
Mike's sales goal last year was $90,071. His employer increased it to $124,111 this year. What percentage of increase is this, and how did you arrive at the answer?
Thanking y'all in advance. :)

New Math also is like this: Bob has 10 apples and Sally has none. Why is Bob monopolizing the apple tree?

Your friend is a victim of vicious, out of control capitalism, whose evil minions keep their jackboots on the neck of The People. Only through a complete overthrow of the entire rotten framework of existing society and the forcible re-education of the
petit bourgeoisie can we contemplate social justice, equal distribution of wealth, and a shining new society wherein the workers may march, hand in hand, along the path of historical inevitability.
Either that or 37.79%. I figure it's a tossup.

Answer: We will cut down the apple tree and distribute the apples on the now-dead branches to Sally, Laquisha, Maria and muhommed. We will then give Bob back one.

Sounds like Mike is blowing out his monthly budgets and his managers see either a lot of potential in Mike’s territory or in Mike...or both! Good for Mike ;)

Fellow FReepers, y’all are disappointing.
Here we are at around 65 or so replies to the original question and no one has shown how to solve it using Common Core math.

I still have two (both K & E), including the first one I bought in a pawn shop when I was in high school, bought about 1952. I used it until I had to get a fancy one in college. And btw, using one is like riding a bike, once you learn, you never forget!

$124,111/ $90,071 = 1.377924.
I'd call it a 38% increase.

But you have a heftier long division problem.
++++++++++
Actually you can get an answer that is close enough for government work by simply dividing 124 by 90.
And you can do that in your head:
Dividing by 90 is very close to multiplying by .011
Multiplying 124 by .011 is exactly the same as multiplying 1.24 times 1.1
1.24 times 1.1 is 1.24 plus .124 and that equals 1.364
Which would give you a 36.4% increase.
If you use .0111 instead of .011 you would be even closer.
All in your head.
Piece of cake.
Good enough for an Obmacare accountant.

$90,071*(1+x) = $124,111
solve for x
express as a percent.
