Manjo Kim was turned down by 11 American universities when she wanted to do further research on the dish
When Dr Manjo Kim told her chemistry professor that she was keen to pursue research on kimchi, he scoffed.
The then-Korean marine biochemistry undergraduate at Pusan University, and later Seoul University, was interested in her country's national condiment.
Undeterred, she decided to apply for PhD fellowships at 11 American universities to do research on kimchi, but was turned down.
Finally, she was accepted into Leeds University in Britain, where she wrote her doctorate dissertation on the topic in the 1960s.

Thanks. Kimchi is the stuff of life!
Only if she deserves it of course.
INCOMING!
5.56mm
Just made 3 jars two weeks ago. I’ve had a nasty cold and it is comfort food for that. When it gets too pungent I stir fry it with rice.
It also lures my daughter over for visits, as she lived in Korea for a year and is addicted to kimchi. It was at her suggestion that I started making my own.
Be nice to read the whole article, but I’m going to register to do that.
I know someone who made a career out of writing about clitoral imagery in Emnily Dickinson poetry.
Very cool. I just need to get some jars and give it a whirl. My mom uses the same trick to lure me over. :)
Oh yes I can.
I had enough when I discovered I had to become a member of a weird site to read a marginal "news" story.
Somebody’s in deep kimchi right now!
Me too. Love it!!!
Good stuff.
Oops.
register = not register
If you are interested I will post my recipe.
Kimchi is actually very easy to make. 5 minutes to cut up the cabbage and put it into the brine. Maybe 20 minutes at the other end to make the red pepper paste, mix it and bottle it in jars.
It’s kind of gratifying the first time you eat some you made yourself.
Sure, I’d love to see yours :)
As it works out, I’m going to buy some kimchi today. You find the best stuff at Asian stores.
I always spice my kimchi up even more than it comes.
Who cares about a social life, anyway?
