Shirley student, Kwasi Enin, accepted at all 8 Ivy League schools
Newsday (NY) ^ | March 31, 2014 | ZACHARY R. DOWDY

Seventeen-year-old Kwasi Enin of Shirley took a shot at -- and won -- what amounts to an academic royal flush: He applied to and was accepted at all eight Ivy League schools.

But the William Floyd High School senior said he never thought he'd land slots in the class of 2018 at Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, the University of Pennsylvania and Yale. He hasn't decided where he'll attend, but would cross Long Island Sound to attend Yale in New Haven, Conn., depending on the financial aid package offered.

Every Ivy League school is dying to get minority students, but the sad thing is that they often fail -- because they are competing with the best white and asian students, who are smarter because they don't get minority treatment. Most of these minority students would be much better off if they went to lesser schools where the whites and asians are at the same level as they are.

Maybe I’ll change my kids names to things like Kwasi, or Kmbo so they can have a shot at an ivy league school.

:roll eyes:

“He has an SAT score of 2,250 out of 2,400, which places him in the 99th percentile for all students taking the exam.”

He is a black guy who tests in the 99th percentile. I’m surprised the president of Harvard didn’t send his private jet to pick him up!

No an Ivy school but I would have tried for admission to MIT. Not for everyone, I guess.

Sigh. And if his name was Casey Ellis?

The young man is an impressive student - very good SATs, although not fantastic, a musician, an athlete...

There are students in my children’s high school who would seem on paper to equal or top his accomplishments, and they are not being accepted to every Ivy League school.

sounds like he’s first-generation American from Ghana.

I’m sure there was some racist bias in accepting him, but I’m still very happy for and that he can show the racists of low expectations that a black kid can get an SAT score of 2,250 our of 2500 if he is not raised from a culture of total depravity.

Ain't affirmative action grand?

2250 is a pretty good SAT score, but in fact, it is just about at the median for most Ivy’s, and even below for hyper competitive schools like Stanford, Harvard, MIT.

The kid is clearly smart, but higher educations’ racist fever and its grail-like quest for “diversity” means that a “Kwasi Enin” is going to hit the racial jackpot in higher education.

The US Supreme Court has decided that you are any gender or race that you decide you are.

Have your kids define themselves as transsexual female African-American on their applications and they can go anywhere they want.

Malcolm Gladwell’s new book “David and Goliath” takes affirmative action to task in a brilliant manner. Is the practice useful? In some cases, yes. Is it instituted wisely? Not even close.

He sounds like a great kid raised in a wonderful family. He has uncles and cousins who have gone to Ivies, so intelligence clearly runs in the family.

What is totally remarkable is the lack of mention of “black” or ANY hint of grievance mongering in this fine article. Jesse and Al will have to fix that ASAP.

but this particular student does not seem like most minority students... in fact, he does not seem like most white students... he could fare well... he is a triple threat... he has academics, athletics and the performing arts going for him... good on him :)

I am sure his race had something to do with it. But...this kid is impressive. I love seeing first generation anyone getting that far ahead.

While the schools fill racial quotas, there are also regional quotas. I live in a very competitive school district where high achievers are often wait listed, where if they came from the next town over they would be accepted.

If this kids was in an under performing district, plus he fill a racial diversity slot— that would all be in his favor.

That said, this kid is impressive and we should all applaud his hard work and determination. This is what America is all about.

8 schools?

Harvard, for instance, charges $75 for an application fee. The others are comparable. Must have gotten waivers and suchlike. Whatever else, it shows that he’s good at doing the bureaucracy dance.
