Every Ivy League school is dying to get minority students, but the sad thing is that they often fail -- because they are competing with the best white and asian students, who are smarter because they don't get minority treatment. Most of these minority students would be much better off if they went to lesser schools where the whites and asians are at the same level as they are.

“He has an SAT score of 2,250 out of 2,400, which places him in the 99th percentile for all students taking the exam.”

He is a black guy who tests in the 99th percentile. I’m surprised the president of Harvard didn’t send his private jet to pick him up!

No an Ivy school but I would have tried for admission to MIT. Not for everyone, I guess.

Sigh. And if his name was Casey Ellis?

The young man is an impressive student - very good SATs, although not fantastic, a musician, an athlete...

There are students in my children’s high school who would seem on paper to equal or top his accomplishments, and they are not being accepted to every Ivy League school.

sounds like he’s first-generation American from Ghana.

I’m sure there was some racist bias in accepting him, but I’m still very happy for and that he can show the racists of low expectations that a black kid can get an SAT score of 2,250 our of 2500 if he is not raised from a culture of total depravity.

Ain't affirmative action grand?

Malcolm Gladwell’s new book “David and Goliath” takes affirmative action to task in a brilliant manner. Is the practice useful? In some cases, yes. Is it instituted wisely? Not even close.

He sounds like a great kid raised in a wonderful family. He has uncles and cousins who have gone to Ivies, so intelligence clearly runs in the family.

What is totally remarkable is the lack of mention of “black” or ANY hint of grievance mongering in this fine article. Jesse and Al will have to fix that ASAP.

I am sure his race had something to do with it. But...this kid is impressive. I love seeing first generation anyone getting that far ahead.

While the schools fill racial quotas, there are also regional quotas. I live in a very competitive school district where high achievers are often wait listed, where if they came from the next town over they would be accepted.

If this kids was in an under performing district, plus he fill a racial diversity slot— that would all be in his favor.

That said, this kid is impressive and we should all applaud his hard work and determination. This is what America is all about.

8 schools?

Harvard, for instance, charges $75 for an application fee. The others are comparable. Must have gotten waivers and suchlike. Whatever else, it shows that he’s good at doing the bureaucracy dance.

Oh come on! Does anyone really think that a white kid with identical qualifications would have been accepted in ALL the Ivy league schools?

Good for him - his accomplishments should be advertised as an example to all students. But, don’t tell any of the poverty pimps - they will insist he live in the ghetto to prove that whitey is holding him down. They can’t stand it when a minority works hard and succeeds without their help (come to think of it, have they ever helped anyone succeed???).

•Kwasi Enin, 17, is the son of immigrant nurses from Ghana

•He was a senior at William Floyd High School in Mastic, N.Y, with an SAT score of 2,250 out of 2,400

THE STORY BEHIND THE STORY!!!
Enin is a first generation American from Ghana. His parents, both nurses, moved to New York in the 1980s.

Meaning he has zero slave blood, That his family has never suffered from slavery and racism. In fact they immigrated to this horrible racist country. It is outrageous that immigrants and their progeny get affirmative action preferences. AA is supposed to redress past racism...and this family does not have one in America

But Harvard etc could care less just so long as they get some black faces

Good for this kid! I saw him interviewed on TV this morning and he is definitely exceptional. While the article says his father is a nurse, both of his parents are healthcare professionals........

As far as financial aid, it's quite possible that the combined incomes of his parents may drastically limit what he could be eligible for.......
