When Bill and Melinda Gates go to Africa and see healthy people and sick people, they presumably have a single thought: what can we do to make everyone healthy? The problems are easily understood; goals can be clearly stated. Given a big commitment, theres a high chance of success.
~snip~
What fascinates Bill Gates is something else entirely: namely, the variety and incoherence from school to school, city to city, and state to state. It looks so messy and inefficient. And he thinks: a guy with my money and management skills should be able to organize all this disorder, turn it into an efficient machine, save the country, and make another fortune in the process.
~snip~
But at that moment he has lost the game. Because he is no longer talking about educational goals, which must be our main concern. He is talking about standardization. He is talking about a tidier assembly line. (But nobody ever said that democracy is supposed to be tidy. Dictatorship is tidy.)
Bill Gates brought a programmers sensibility to education. There is a maximally efficient way to design a piece of software. So lets do that, and stop all this other nonsense. Bad plan, even with the best of intentions.
~snip~
If you state that henceforth all children should be able to do X, because thats the new standard, does this mean that all children can do X? Can even half the children do X? Read some of the verbose standards, and youll probably conclude that virtually no kid can do X.
~snip~
Bill Gates and Common Core are obsessed with arranging things in standardized patterns, coast to coast. So we must have standards that will somehow apply to everyone. Then we need identical curricula, and well need identical tests.

For one, start using DDT again!
If a guy wanted to impress a girl, why would he name his company Microsoft?
but...but...DDT is an ATTACK Pesticide...
Reintroducing the use of DDT would do much to roll back the gains of malaria in Africa. But the ones that would most benefit from such a policy would be blacks who would live longer and healthier lives. So for liberals, that policy is already a non-starter.
It’s not a failure. Its purpose is to equalize outcomes. The way to do that is to cripple the non-minoritah kids so the perform at the same level as the minoritahs.
:>)
yes an ASSUALT Pesticide....even the packages are Scarely Looking...

After Microsoft got cornered by the Clinton administration, when Reno tried to force him to provide a backdoor for government access to all his computers, he got a bit gun-shy.
Gates is a software whiz and is basically unschooled in both politics and education. So he has to depend on others to supply his information for him.
Guess who stepped forward to give him all the info he was going to need to work with?
He hired ex-Clinton administrators to run his foundation, because he didn't know any better.
I know of a top-notch and substantially proven reading education group who approached Bill Gates about their reading program and they were demised out of hand after his own "experts" told him that was not the way to go.
Instead, his new-found "experts" steered him toward Bill Ayers brand of Common Core.
No wonder Bill Ayers is crowing.
“If a guy wanted to impress a girl, why would he name his company Microsoft?”
If you are a billionaire, it is no longer necessary to do anything to impress girls.
I read somewhere that they don’t.
They don’t use it at Sidwell Friends either, where Obama’s girls go. They just use it at public schools and some misguided private schools, which will probably dump it down the road. Public schools have a harder time getting rid of bad curriculum, so unless public school parents threaten to pull their kids en masse, it will be around for years.
“There is a maximally efficient way to design a piece of software.”
That notion is lost on Microsoft.
Oh no! Gates demised them! Can’t resist a joke but your post cleared up much of what I didn’t understand about common core...
Bill Gates would never be able to fix this nation’s education for one simple reason. This country’s teachers’ unions have far more money...and political clout...then he ever dreamed of having.
You are correct.
Except what is happening is that ALL state testing, the SAT, ACT and AP exams are being re-aligned to reflect the CC curriculum.
These exams are important for college admissions so to do well, students must be well-versed in CC standards.
They are being re-aligned to “catch” homeschoolers and private schools, to make them toe the line so to speak.
They’re making sure NO ONE escapes this evil plan.
Got to make sure those ‘educational’ trains run on time, right?
