The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
Uh oh. Somehow we got on last week’s thread. LOL
Good catch. In checking both threads, it doesn’t look like they even missed us! :( I have been on this one all day at least. I blame my combination of serious meds, what’s your excuse? LOL LOL :o)
I guess I will go over there for a while. Or maybe not. It is a bit quieter here. LOL I’m anti-social tonight, I guess. You really rocked my little world, greeneyes. Surprize, surprize, surprize. Wait till I tell my wife this. LOL
I was just responding to pings on whatever thread and didn’t really notice it, until I noticed that there was over 400 posts, and I thought Wow I must have missed a lot of conversation.
Looking back through, it started with post 384.
Can you drill some holes at one end of some 6 or 7 foot pvc pipes, slip them upright over rebar stakes, or t posts in the ground, then string that plastic coated wire clothesline through the holes? (or you could do pvc cross pieces instead of clothesline, I guess) I would think you could even throw some of that lightweigt fake and totally vinyl fencing stuff from Lowe's over the top, and zip tie it to the clothesline cross pieces, and that would weigh hardly anything.
Can you climb a ladder to do that sort of thing?
BTW, a cattle panel weighs slightly less than 50 lbs..I think that is the easiest way to go..At TSC, they load them for you, and if your yard guys are around, they could help you unload one. :))
Surprised often, when something is found, that has been
forgotten.
We have red wigglers in our Keyhole gardens. One we’re
setting up with jars in the middle of soil, attached to a
clear plastic tube. We’ll be able to send down a camera,
through the tube and watch the wigglers doing their thing.
I understand they reproduce quickly. So we may have to build another Keyhole garden. In fact I’m collecting beer
bottles, which we have a lot of, around here, and will be
building a Beer bottle Keyhole garden.
The ladder problem would come from being a sloped ground and possibly soft soil sinking. Too risky. There is no flat ground here. I have to check motor oil at a parking lot somewhere.
At 6 or 7ft height, I can reach with no problem. I can cut 2 x 4 ‘s into 1.5 x whatever thickness on my table saw. I make mater stakes 1 x 1.5 inches. That would make nice cross pieces. My dad used galvanized pipe for an overhead rack, IIRC, with split 2x4’s.
I have a few section of PVC pipe around here. You could make a ladder-like grid and fold it over like a cattle panel. Hmmm....I see I need to do some thinkingineering.
Cattle panels are the easiest way to make a grow arch. If I had started sooner, I would have done that.
Sounds like my rotting deck wood..I have to lay plywood down, and set the ladder on that to make sure one of the legs doesn't go through the decking. Even if I try to set the ladder legs over the joists underneath, I'm afraid the decking on top will give way.
Replacing the decking is on my "to do" list..I should've bought it in February when everyone had it on sale. Now, with the garden push, it's further down on my list.
Does your lake have fish? Do you fish? When you clean
the fish, put the heads, bones and whatever in a barrel
with water. Allow to dissolve. Makes great fertilizer. My Dad did that for years. Mom had the best flower garden and lawn. Her roses were beautiful. Pappa sprayed the soil every spring.
It has fish, they say. I can’t seen to catch them from the small pier or bank, but guys with boats bring in 5lb-6lb bass and small catfish. My fishing friend always buried his culls beside his plants and they were very happy plants. I could pay some boys in the area to catch fish for me. They just like to hook anything, any size. I haven’t been fishing in a couple of years, but am anxious to go again. It’s something the wife and I can do together for fun and R&R.
Wasn’t it you that asked last year what she did to grow zennias? PM me if it was and I will give you a link to her zennia starting video on youtube that she made a few days ago.
Thank you. Fish do make flowers grow beautifully.
