7 Things Your Kid Will Spend Their Life Doing If You Give Them a Weird Name
Yahoo ^ | 03/26/2014 | Someone with a weird name

Posted on 03/28/2014 12:08:12 PM PDT by Responsibility2nd

It took me years to like my weird name, which - now that I'm 35 - isn't all that weird anymore. But growing up in a sea of Stephanies, Lauras, Lisas, Jennifers, and Jessicas, I longed for a normal name.

Life with a weird name was rough as a kid. (It's not that much easier as an adult; I've just gotten used to it.)

And while I appreciate the diversity of names, a little part of me cringes inside when I hear a parent call to their daughter, Anais. Her life is going to be tough.

Don't people know this by now? Don't parents know that their desire for uniqueness is going to make their kid's life annoying?

But it is the right of Holder’s people to make up weird names.

There was thread a while back that involved black people, and one of the names mentioned was Darius. I guess they get one right once in a while.

I have a German last name that is rather unusual, and I often respond with “Smith” when people butcher it.

I have the same problem, but a different solution.

Answer the same questions about their names over and over again:

Yep, been there, done that --- for years. Introducing yourself should not be that complicated.

Now, if you are looking at my screen name and wondering how I know this; it is because I changed my name. I couldn't take it anymore, I never liked it, so I decided to change it. I'm much happier with my name now.

My mother refused to speak to me for over a year because I did that.

Interesting thread and glad that I finally have an opportunity to recall a neighbor (England in the 50’s) who had three daughters in as many years, naming them - ‘Merry’, ‘Bright’ and ‘Gaye’.

Everyone thought it was lovely.

My first name is old fashioned and I hated it, but have people say they like it. Not sure why people like to misspell it, though. I have never seen it with two L’s. lol
When I was pregnant, we thought carefully abut his name. I wanted one that would not be shortened. We ended up picking a family name (from both sides, we discovered) and then my Dad’s name for his middle. My Mom was not happy because my father’s name is somewhat unusual and the spelling was different from most. My son uses it, and so do his friends, at times.

Good for you. No one HAS to go through life with a name they don’t like.

I met a kid onece whose first name was “Success” apparently his parents thought that would be helping him out to be successful. Can you imagine what the other kids called him for short?

The worst name I’ve ever heard was ‘Dick Kreck’. Sorry, Mr. Kreck, but your parents may as well have just called you ‘Ick Ack’.

You left out people thinking that your last name is your first, or people bailing on your first name altogether and just calling you by your last. How about wishing you were named something as average as a boy named Sue?

If you go way back, is there really more than one family in W. Va. < ducking>

Hey! My family goes back to the 1760s in what is now West Virginia. :)

Same here. I got Sicilian last name as well and people always pronounce it wrong.

Why should you hate it? I have maybe the most common first name ever given to boys. Figured it out yet? Never bothered me in the slightest that it was very common. I like my very (used to be) common first name.

My name is not unusual.

It is not hard to spell.

But I still have to do 2,3,4,7.

I think people just don't pay attention.

This silly broad wrote an article about her odd name and I’m not sure WHAT her name is. I didn’t see it anywhere on the page or definitively indicated in the story. I’d call her ‘Stupid’ or, for variety, ‘Youannoyingidiot’.

"everybody...unhappy"

Why would you think that? In my life, I've only known one person who didn't like their first name.

True. My first name is only 3 letters. One syllable. I tell them my name - they ask how do you spell that?

(heavy sigh) Really?
