Religious tide turns against 'Noah'
Los Angeles Times ^ | 03/28/2014 | Glenn Whipp

Whenever Hollywood makes a movie from a well-loved story or saga — Batman, Tolkien, "50 Shades of Grey" — there's usually a period of ... well ... let's call it adjustment, along with a "spirited" give-and-take among fans over such things as casting, content and approach.

Usually, though, the material's devotees don't believe the filmmakers will burn in hell if their ideas are ignored. (OK ... maybe the Dark Knight crowd does. We all know they can get a little intense.)

But that's precisely the belief with "Noah," Darren Aronofsky's $130-million retelling of the Old Testament account of apocalyptic deluge and a floating ark that opens on March 28. The same people who gripe that Hollywood never makes any faith-based movies are complaining because Hollywood has gone and made a religious movie, albeit one that might not be as literal-minded as they'd like.

"It's tough to make movies for the easily offended," Pepperdine University communications professor Craig Detweiler said. "Studios assume these biblical stories are public domain, but a lot of believers consider the Bible their private property, and if you don't interpret them the same way they've been taught, they're going to speak out."

Hollywood and religious groups have long been leery of each other, often with good reason. Cecil B. DeMille invited a host of religious representatives — Catholics and Protestants along with Jews, Muslims, Buddhists and Christian Scientists — to offer blessings on the first day of filming "King of Kings," his epic on the life of Christ. And what did DeMille do after receiving the consecration? He opened "King of Kings" with an orgy scene that set up a love triangle among Jesus, Judas and Mary Magdalene. The man knew you needed more than just salvation to sell tickets. You needed a little sin too.

Unfortunately, it rarely works that way. Christians protested Martin Scorsese's 1988 movie "The Last Temptation of Christ" based on hearsay, scandalized at the idea that the movie portrayed a sexualized Jesus. Had they bothered to watch the film, they would have learned that, in adapting Nikos Kazantzakis' novel, Scorsese was presenting the Jesus as taught in the Gospels — fully divine and fully human.
((snip)) That kind of inquisitiveness doesn't seem to be the kind of approach that anyone wants to hear. But it's the only path to the kind of discovery that might deepen one's faith, both in religion and the movies that attempt to examine it.

Almost 30% of the article is devoted to the (anti)Christian film that the media adores and has promoted and advertised endlessly for 26 years so far, a movie that has only grossed 8.4 million dollars, yet which is treated as the first or second top Christian film ever made, by the media.

The article is hilarious and the movie is JUST as described in it.

I am not kidding.

I was expecting some poetic license and for it to be a little off, but it was just WEIRD.

Yeah, I don’t need to see this movie. Too bad about Russell Crowe—thought he was better than this.

Spot on. I agree. I didn't realize that Crow had such vitriolic hatred in his heart for believers in God and the Bible (aka Christians) after listening to him rage against them or anyone daring to have an opinion different than his own about (t)his film in an interview on his way in to see the official preview in Hollyweird yesterday. Shameful.

Now it’s time for Hollywood to make a movie about Mohamed. Lets see them stand up to that outrage.

An excellent observation. Do you think they could find any place in the world they could hide and not be found and beheaded?

I am so glad that you and Erik Erikson has saved me from seeing it! The early trailers looked pretty good, and I was ignoring all the slams against Russell Crowe on FR.

"It's tough to make movies for the easily offended," ....

Would you still feel the same way if this movie was made about the Muslim deity Mohammed in the same distorted and disrespectful manner?

Well the review was so bizarre that I wasn’t sure that it was accurate. But, others say that it is, and that is enough for me. Evil rocks? Really? Unless the movie is about the recent landslide in Washington State, I don’t think that I know any instances of evil rocks and glow in the dark Adams and Eves.

Great movie. Saw it this morning. Be sure to read what most evangelicals ignore “This movie was INSPIRED by the biblical account of Noah”. Absolutely great special effects and Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly should be nominated for academy awards.

“But when it becomes clear that God in this sense is meant to be the Earth itself, then that is something quite different.”

So Mother Earth was pissed that Noah chopped down all those trees to built his yacht so she flooded the place? Odd.

Really awful reporting -- if it is reporting and not just blogging. There's not really that much too the article, is there? The only hard fact about Christian response to the movie here is that one guy found an undated copy of the script a few months back and blogged about it. Is that it for the "religious tide"?

You'd expect that Hollywood would pad out the Bible story with sex and violence. You'd expect that some people would like it and some wouldn't. Some people might protest on religious grounds. Others would find the movie silly. But where's the "religious tide" in that? Just exactly what is the writer talking about and why should anyone care?

That is hilarious— and pretty much what my teenage son thought of it after seeing it last night. He told me it was ridiculous and just plain awful. He saw “Robocop” this afternoon and thought that was much better. Ha!

And I am not kidding, either. ;^)

Read this response to the movie from the web site Rapture Ready.com. The monkey thing at the beginning:

Exposing Noah

By Donna Wasson

Aww, ain’t it sweet when the godless heathen try to make nice and assure Christians that they respect our belief in God and His Word? Unfortunately, they never can quite seem to pull it off. I honestly think they view us as stupid. I really do! Methinks they are projecting.

Take the example of this new $135 million “blockbuster” epic movie that just hit the theaters, Noah. The avowed atheist director, Darren Aronofsky wrote a disclaimer which states:

“The film is inspired by the story of Noah. While artistic license has been taken, we believe that this film is true to the essence, values and integrity of a story that is a cornerstone of faith for millions of people worldwide. The Biblical story of Noah can be found in the book of Genesis.”

Hmm. The filmmakers must believe in the Tooth Fairy also because from what I’ve read about what’s in this claptrap of a movie, “truth, values and integrity” are in short supply! The entertainment industry states they’re trying to woo Christians, but this movie is actually a VERY clever ploy to mislead the un-churched population of sheeple into believing things about God, Christianity and Judaism that simply aren’t true. Let me give you some examples. Prepare for a spike in your blood pressure. *deep breath*

First, the evolutionist agenda of the film is thrown in your face by showing a montage of monkeys and apes, leading up to Adam and Eve. Gee. Who would have seen THAT coming? However, the main gist of the story is steeped in rabid environmentalism. Mankind sinned against the creator, A/K/A ‘earth,’ by cutting down trees to build dwellings, using wood to build fires to keep warm, strip mining, eating meat, and picking dainty little flowers.

No, I’m not kidding. Noah gets stoned on hallucinogens and thinks he hears the creator tell him man and beast will be destroyed because man has abused the earth, therefore he needs to build an ark and save some of the poor, pitiful animals. I didn’t realize God was a tree-hugger. There is NO mention of man’s depravity, idolatry, violence, evil, or the genetic pollution of the Nephilim, as the reason for the flood.

Some of those things are depicted by people ripping animals apart to eat while they’re still alive, worshipping a golden calf and general violence, selfishness and mayhem. But that’s not why the creator is disgusted with or judging mankind. No, it’s because man abused Mother Earth. Noah severely chastises his young son for picking a flower just because it’s pretty, and he kills two people to save an injured animal.

According to Breitbart’s review of the movie, “In ‘Noah’ there is one man who does judge others for being covetous, lustful and some other legitimate sins, but it’s not God. It’s Noah. And Noah does not see these qualities in the humanity God will wipe out; he only sees them in his own family—the very family God has chosen to survive because of their righteousness.”

“And Noah is portrayed as a dangerous, religious extremist for judging others in this way. It is at this point that he goes off the deep end in a fit of self-righteousness that ends with a promise to murder his own newborn granddaughters.”

This movie is nothing more than anti-God and anti-Christian propaganda, serving to continue to further the lie that Christians who are God fearing, Bible believers are dangerous terrorists who are intolerant and violent. The Illuminati shills in Hollywood are doing the bidding of their masters very well.

Our wonder Creator, Almighty God is portrayed as an evil, vengeful, hateful being, which makes those of us who love and serve Him the same due to association. In reality, it’s the irrational Hollywood mouth foaming, environmental, climate change, ‘don’t-confuse-me-with-facts,-my-mind-is-made-up freaks,’ who are evil, vengeful and hateful.

Please, do NOT participate in this farce by buying overpriced tickets to this intestinal swill. Don’t waste your money, and by all means tell your friends not to waste theirs either! Let’s send the antagonistic, atheistic, mocking Hollywood players a very strong message: You mock us and our God, we’ll hit what you worship—your pocketbook!

Thank you. Here is Ed Morrisey’s review from Hot Air:

http://hotair.com/archives/2014/03/31/film-review-noah/

During morning drive heard a couple of folks say it was a good movie, entertaining, and they said, they were not Chrisitans. Two others said it was totally unrelated to the Biblical story in theme and outlook. One of the latter mentioned “God Is NOT Dead” as very good;” the other of the latter, said to go see “Son of God” for a good Christian message movie.

I think I can find a more Christian message in any of the Harry Potter movies than from what I’ve heard about Noah. I have seen kudo’s written about Crowe’s and Watson’s performances.

Then don’t advertise it as “true to the values of biblical scripture” in an attempt to squeeze out dollars from the productive segment of society.
