The highly anticipated next installment of the "Star Wars" franchise will be set 30 years after "Episode VI: Return of the Jedi," Walt Disney Co.'s chief executive officer Bob Iger said on Tuesday at the company's annual shareholders meeting.

Disney purchased "Star Wars" production company LucasFilm for $4.05 billion in 2012 and announced it would release three new films in the popular sci-fi series. Fans have been avidly awaiting details of the next film, "Star Wars: Episode VII."

The religion and political views of George Lucas

Lucas, we’re going to have to say, is a Democrat. During the 2008 election, he made contributions to both McCain and Obama (and the very controversial Citizens United Political Victory Fund) but here’s the funny thing: He gave $300 to McCain and over $33,000 to Obama.

Depends upon which books you’re talking about the Expanded Universe isn’t considered Star Was “canon” , but if Mr. Lucas himself released any kind of Episode Books for VII-IX then yeah, they’d be hard to reconcile those with these new movies.

"Episode VII" will be released on December 18, 2015, and will be directed by J.J. Abrams who helmed the recent "Star Trek" film franchise reboot

Sigh.
This means that Luke will enter a time distortion/limbo/alternate universe, something will radically change reality and the director will show whatever plotline he wants to. It won't matter that Darth Vader died in Episode 6.

It will be heavy on special effects and techno-jibberish. Expect lots of CGI, frequent camera view changes with weird lighting, loud background music and an abundance of youthful actors with a mild amount of silly diologue.

OTOH, J.J Abrams isn't politically correct and does provide an entertaining story.

I wish I could be more excited, but to be honest, I only really liked the original Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back. Return of the Jedi was pretty good, but not great, IMHO. I couldn’t get into any of the prequels.

It should be interesting just how powerful Luke Skywalker has become. In the canon, he becomes strong enough to destroy planets.

typical. if they really wanted to make him powerful they should have made him be able to CREATE planets.

I’ve never really bought the “9 movie plan”. Too much of the story is clearly not done with a long term plan (like Luke and Leia’s attempted relationship in the first movie and then they’re siblings in the third).
