Yuengling to release Summer Wheat seasonal beer

D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc. appears to be building its seasonal beer brand.

The Pottsville-based brewer will be releasing a new seasonal beer, Summer Wheat Traditional Weizen Beer in April.

It is the third beer in Yuengling's seasonal lineup which includes Bock in the spring and Oktoberfest in the fall.

The Summer Wheat is brewed with a combination of wheat and barley malts. A Hallertau hops and Bavarian-style top fermenting yeast will deliver a thick, creamy head with overtones of banana and clove, according to a press release.

The authentic German Weizen style beer will boast a slight hazy appearance but have a crisp finish.

Owner Dick Yuengling was inspired to create the beer several years ago after a trip to Germany, said Jen Holtzman, Yuengling's spokeswoman.

"Yuengling does not frequently introduce new beers or packaging configurations, so it is something that was considered carefully," she said.

Building a full seasonal line is ideal from the sales side of the business but it also provides greater exposure to new customers and creates more Yuengling fans, Holtzman said.

In 2009, Yuengling rebrewed its Bock for the first time in 40 years.

Interesting - I wonder if it will be produced in FL as well as PA.

BTW, I commented on another thread earlier that NE didn't deserve Yuengling. They got it anyway, as they started distributing again in MASS (the 15th state to be so blessed).

I think if one has ever tried Bud’s American Ale, it’s a bit like Yuengling’s flagship brew for those who can’t obtain Yuengling.

Yuengling is going the way of Leinenkugel - and that’s not a bad thing.

“Scratched s Adams and Heine off my ‘to buy’ list”

Me too - as of yesterday when I read about what they did with the St. Pat’s Day Parade

“and no Yuengling isn’t a Chinese brew.”

Oh, I know. I’ve had more than a few of them myself.

Offering a variety of beers - especially seasonal ones. Leinenkugel has been doing it for years. It might be good to compare this new Yuengling with Leinie’s Sunset Wheat: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/710/29015/

I've always wondered how any manufacturer could claim to be "America's Oldest Brewery," but I see their latest six pack has a historical footnote that explains everything:

I once brought Yuengling to a party only to have one inebriated friend opine “I ain’t drinking no GD Chinaman beer”.

"The German brewer David Gottlob Jüngling immigrated to the United States in 1823 from Aldingen, a suburb of Stuttgart, in the Kingdom of Württemberg.

He anglicized his surname from Jüngling to Yuengling and began the "Eagle Brewery" on Center Street in Pottsville in 1829. His eldest son, David, Jr., left the Eagle Brewery to establish the James River Steam Brewery along the James River in Richmond, Virginia.

The first brewery burned down in an 1831 fire and the company relocated to W. Mahantongo Street at 5th Street, its current location. The Eagle Brewery changed its name to "D. G. Yuengling and Son" in 1873 after Frederick Yuengling joined his father David in running the company. Although the company's name changed, the bald eagle remained the company's emblem.

During the late 19th century, breweries were also opened in Saratoga Springs, New York City, and Trail, British Columbia, although they were eventually merged with the Pottsville plant."

I’ve met Dick twice - both times he was chain smoking and talking a mile a minute. Very intense, steely guy. He won’t “give” the brewery to his daughters, they will have to “buy” it, like he did from his Father.

They are a great family - well grounded - yet enjoying their wealth. All of Freeperland should support them and their non-union produced products.

As for Texas, I asked him about that last year and he said “we’re looking into it.” They almost had a deal w/ a brewery in TN that would have given them access to TX, but it fell through. He doesn’t just jump into things. It has to be the right deal at the right time.

I think they’ll buy another brewery this year (just my opinion), and sales will skyrocket yet again.

The owner sounds like an interesting man. I like their beer. I also like two other beers; “Dogfish Head” and “ Spencer Trappist Ale”.

This should be in breaking news... I am series because this is HUGH.

Back home, near the Lehigh Valley, we all drank Yeungling... and it seems that everywhere in the country I go, I hear people saying how they wish the could get Yeungling where they live.

I saw a news story lately on our local station about the old Richmond VA Yuengling brewery. Here is a link http://wtvr.com/2014/01/11/holmberg-deep-down-rva-a-new-life-for-145-year-old-underground-beer-vaults/
