It’s A Warrior Thing. You Wouldn’t Understand. [David Yeagley died yesterday]

WE INDIANS are supposed to hate the white man. Everyone tells me this. I’ve heard it from whites, blacks and even from Indians.

Well, folks, I hate to disappoint you, but I like white people just fine. To tell the truth, I rather admire them and their fascinating history.

Oh, I know what you’re thinking. "Yeagley! How can you say that? How can you admire a people who slaughtered your ancestors, gave smallpox to those left alive, herded them onto reservations, made them all drunks, and as the final indignity sold their turquoise mines to the Japanese?"

Well, the way I figure it, anyone who could whip our Indian behinds like the white man did deserves our highest respect. And anyone who can whip a Comanche (my tribe) deserves the Medal of Honor.

I admire a man who can beat me. I dare say, deep inside all Indians at least those who are still warriors at heart there is a special admiration for the white man.

When the Comanches first encountered the white man, his behavior didn’t shock them. They saw that he took what he wanted by force. And they understood. Because the Comanches did the same to their weaker neighbors.

If my ancestors had been strong enough, they would have taken the white man’s land, instead of the other way around. And they wouldn’t have felt guilty about it afterwards. You wouldn’t have seen any defeated white people getting affirmative action from Comanches.

When one general surrenders to another, they salute each other. It doesn’t mean that there’s no bitterness between them. It just means that a warrior respects his foe.

White people understand this, because they too come from a warrior culture. The white man has great respect for the Indian....

A very sad day and big loss for many of us who have followed the writings of David Yeagley. Only in his early 60's, he died from cancer and related conditions that he has fought since childhood. This column about the Warrior Indian is what attracted me to Yeagley. He was anything but PC, and that made him less than welcome in many circles. He was a devout Christian, so now he is up there with Jesus finally out of pain.

Mr. Rushing seems to feel that there is more honor in being pathetic.

It is the liberal ethos.

Just from reading that article I can tell that there was a man.
Whether he was red, white, black, yellow or any shade in between - there was a man who fit the title "Brother of the warrior blood".
RIP, Mr. Yeagley.

Sad he's gone. He understood that the UND logo was something of respect, that an amazing number of white people, many of whose ancestors had fought his, paid tribute to the Sioux by adopting "Fighting Sioux" as the nickname of their sports teams, with the approval of the Standing Rock Tribal elders.

Unfortunately, we live in a day and age when the very nature of Honor and Bravery are under assault, and when there are those who will relentlessly be offended for people who have no cause to take offense.

As Mr. Yeagley has passed, so, officially has the nickname, and we are all poorer for the loss of both.

FTA:Today, the leftists tell us that the "Fighting Sioux" name is an insult to Indians, and we must demand that the university change it. I guess that goes for the Apache and Comanche helicopters too.
Gee does this mean that bikers who ride INDIAN motorcycles, or anyone who owns a PONTIAC, Jeep CHEROKEE, or a late '50's Chevy pickup, which were named APACHES, should be ashamed of themselves? And speaking of controversial names for teams, the quaint little village of Nyack, NY is a sort of San Francisco-on-the-Hudson. They pride themselves on being the first town in the region that elected an openly homosexual mayor, it's a very PC place. Yet the high school football team is still called the (horror of horrors) Nyack INDIANS.

I have greatly enjoyed his writings over the years and am saddened that is no longer here in this ol’ world. On the other hand, he is with his maker and in His kingdom.

Sad to hear of our loss. My favorite David Yeagley quote went something like,

“Your typical Indian likes his guns, his hunting, his pickup truck, and his freedom. That sort of Indian is more redneck than redskin.”

I would have added that Indians like their fishing, too - I love Rednecks!

Rest Peacefully Mr. David Yeagley. Prayers for your Family to be comforted. May your memory live forever but not simply with your Family, as One who told the truth. Truth telling is so rare these days. Thank You, for your version of I swear on the Bible Truth!

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Yeagley and hearing him speak. Very funny guy. I remember one offhand remark of his:

If you convince people that you do your work because you love it and are passionate about it -- they won't pay you.

I can just hear Dr. Y saying that. ;o)

Dr. Y was very talented in many other ways besides political/cultural analysis - his music, dancing, teaching. I don’t think any of that made him any money either.

He said never married because he didn’t want to knowingly saddle a wife with all of his medical problems. That’s sad because we never know where life will take us (quickly from a state of health to disease or injury) — what is one person’s burden can be another’s loving desire to support. I didn’t say that very well, but I hope my meaning comes through.

I regret that I had never read and of Mr. Yeagley’s work until now. But I assure you, I intend to rectify that omission toot sweet. He speaks with a pithy bluntness that Indians have perfected.

God speed you to your well-earned rest, Mr. Yeagley.

Thank you - introductions to people like Yeagley are one of the reasons I treasure FR. I wish it hadn’t been upon his death, but I’m grateful it happened at all. BTT

"WE INDIANS are supposed to hate the white man. Everyone tells me this."

That would leave a very large number of us Americans hating ourselves. Look around us. There are Indians along with others in many of those eyes.

That applies to the whole planet. Where's the pure European (see settlements of Huns/Mongols, Turks, Moors, Vikings/Normen, etc.)?

Watch a bunch of Chinese kung fu flicks with Medieval and ancient settings. See some of the dress, mannerisms, the drums, the dances, colors, architecture, weapons, etc. Whoa.

I haven’t seen anything from Yeagley in quite a while. You often don’t realize that some of our great columnists & pundits go missing until they pass away.
