Sbarro has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization for the second time in just three years as the pizza chain struggles to turn its business around amid a drop in traffic at shopping mall food courts.
The bankruptcy filing on Monday comes after the company shuttered 155 of its U.S. locations last month. The Melville, N.Y., company still has about 800 locations globally, half of those in North America.
The pizza chain isnt alone in hurting from the decline in traffic at shopping malls. Earlier this year, the owner of Hot Dot on a Stick also filed for bankruptcy protection, citing the negative impact from the trend.

The CEO should be forced to apologize to America on live TV for the worst, godawful pizza in the nation.
Quite so. They’re worth half of what Domino’s charges for pizza.
This pizza company has no dough
Nasty sludge masquerading as pizza.
Surprised they made it this long....
................for the worst, godawful pizza in the nation.............
I’m surprised! But the only Sbarro stuff that I’ve eaten is at the airports, where I guess that a slice is off a recent pizza kept warm in the display - pretty good!
Only really good pizza I’ve had is from a local shop, or up in New England, D’Angelos, wood fired pizza. Great, but too many kids in the place to really enjoy your wine!
When freshly made, Sbarro’s is actually pretty good.
Shut own the mall locations and move into strip center where costs are far lower and sell by the slice or a whole pie. They could position the company like Papa Murphys with the food already cooked; and in the take-and-bake segment of the market.
I usually avoid mall food courts like the plague.
mall pizza... excuse me... [barf]
Well, you seem to be in good company.
The other places Sbarro’s are most commonly found are airports and major city train stations.
I like this trend... crappy restaurants going out of business. What surprises me is that Sbarro is allowed to file bankruptcy so soon after the first one. Individuals aren't allowed to do so within a 7 year period of filing bankruptcy, so how is it that corporations get to?
Part of lawlessness due to crony oorporatism. All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others.
I used to say they should call their stores “Sbarro’s Barely Pizza.”
Ketchup on cardboard. Yuck.
