If youre talking tech with Americans, you may want to avoid using any jargon. A recent study found that many Americans are lost when it comes to tech-related terms, with 11% saying that they thought HTMLa language that is used to create websiteswas a sexually transmitted disease. [

Besides HTML, there were some other amusing findings:
- 77% of respondents could not identify what SEO means. SEO stands for Search-Engine Optimization.
- 27% identified gigabyte as an insect commonly found in South America. A gigabyte is a measurement unit for the storage capacity of an electronic device.
- 42% said they believed a motherboard was the deck of a cruise ship. A motherboard is usually a circuit board that holds many of the key components of a computer.
- 23% thought an MP3 was a Star Wars robot. It is actually an audio file.
- 18% identified Blu-ray as a marine animal. It is a disc format typically used to store high-definition videos.
- 15% said they believed software is comfortable clothing. Software is a general term for computer programs.
- 12% said USB is the acronym for a European country. In fact, USB is a type of connector.

What is a beeber ?
A very high-tech device used by FreeRepublic moderators. Can be set to "stune":
...or in severe cases, to "ZOT":
And please, as with all powerful devices:

In his defense, al baby did NOT claim to have seen a beeber. He said he saw a beeber-like device. It could have been anything, a detonator, a poison pistol, a (shudder) game controller...
To: Darksheare
Hopefully........not disappointing, snicker.

Well, I did really screw the thread up with italics at the time.
And it was a rather serious thread.
And I was really really new.
*chuckle*
My HTML was exceedingly weak.
[Worse now with my typos.]
I needed the *stompy stompy* “This is how you do it instead” at the time.
Sadly, since the forum no longer requires hand html, many forum newbs no longer get that mentoring from older handles.
No, they usually cop an attitude about it.

Think we’ll ever run across anyone who will be willing to learn from either of us in the future?
The younger crowds out there are kinda different these days.
Maybe they need a visit of FredHelp instead?

Everyone has a tale of woe... about a week after I got the nerve to sign up (lurked since ‘98) I got sideways with A+Bert when he was *ahem* “under the weather” and he tore me a new one.
To: Tijeras_Slim; Cyber Liberty
Cyber ended up teaching me html and other forum stuff afterwards.
It turned out better than I at the time thought.
Oddly, I never had A+Bert drop a bus on me.
Dunno why.
Maybe I didn’t bother him much?
