In before the Microsoft vendors/salesmen find this thread and show up and tell us how Windows 8 is really great, it’s just we are too stupid to realize how great it and Bill Gates really are!!

Bump

“With just a little over month to go before Microsoft officially pulls the plug on Windows XP, there is a lot at stake for those who don’t migrate away from the 14-year old operating system.”

Operate two 8.1s, one 7.0, and two XPs. Have not found ONE feature that causes me even the slightest desire to get rid of the XPs.

Personally, I can't wait. No more stupid gold shield alerts. I would just assume MS ignore me. They've gotten my last dollar.
Yet I will continue to use XP...just not for intenet access. That will be disconnected in favor of a Linux VM.

I had to get a new computer and it came with Win 8. I honestly have had no problem with it. It took some getting used to, but it’s worked fine for me. No, I am NOT a shill for Microsoft. I would have preferred to keep my Win 7, but this will do.

“According to the statistics, Windows 7 with a share of 47.31 percent, continues to be the number one OS version followed by Windows XP which is still powering 29.53 percent of desktop computers worldwide.”

I can say I have both operating systems in the house.

If I had a good video card in my old puter I would be useing it and XP and not this Vista junk. I am using vista as I am tired of my ms8. MS8 sounds like a gang and is about as useful to me.

This is my second attempt to post with Vista.

My laptop hard drive went out a few months ago and when I went to replace it I couldn’t read the stupid verification code! My desktop is a home build with XP installed.

So I needed a new OS for both and from what I can gather, I would have to buy TWO licenses to upgrade both computers.

Well, I decided to try Ubuntu 13.10. It’s far more user friendly then I thought it would be and it allows me to do everything I need to do on a computer! Did I mention it was free?

I refuse to buy two licenses for my two home computers at a cost of $220+ dollars. To heck with Windows. They want to regulate and price themselves out of business....fine with me.

I’m very happy with 7 on both my laptop and desktop.I’ll be skipping 8 just as I skipped Vista and ME.

The only reason I have windows running at home (other than it came with the PCs) is because Linux sucks at the games I like to play.

Either that or they don’t even offer the games for Linux.

When that changes so will I. :)

Unfortunately, the Windows 8.1 sales figures I've seen include counts of licenses provided to hardware vendors for pre-installation on turnkey systems. They do not account for those of us who promptly replace Windows 8 with Windows 7 (or, in my case Linux Mint). Some people genuinely like Windows 8; but, in my experience, the adoption and comfort levels are far below what marketing prods us to believe.

Windows 8 is a good OS with a sucky GUI, so on my new 8.1 laptop I installed Classic Shell and it works like my W7 desktop and W7 laptop.

XP is becoming a security risk so I replaced my FIL's XP with Linux Mint w/Cinnamon. I couldn't get it to work with my printer but he never prints anything so it doesn't matter. Mint runs nice on his old comp.

Depends on how you define “operating system.”

I manage a bunch of websites, and Apple’s iOS is the operating system of choice for most visitors. About 37.3% of visitors to Allen West’s website, for example, are from iOS, and 34.6% are from Windows. Android is next at 21.4%, and Mac OSX comes in a mere 5.5% ...

Why don’t they just admit that with XP, they got it about right? They should start selling XP again, and keep supporting it.

Just got a monster of a new laptop Lenovo x230T I7 with 16 Gigs of Ram and 256 Gig SSD and 2 USB 3 ports.

And the deal killer if I could not get it was the ability to be downgraded to Windows7

Windows 8.1 is forced on us when we buy a new computer. That isn’t selling, that is a monopoly that the manufacturers of pc’s are going along with for the most part. They have seen how the public hates Windows 8.1 and do offer Windows 7 but you have to look for it.

This weekend I watched a retired Nasa engineer attempt to give a PowerPoint presentation on a laptop that he bought recently. He fumbled around trying to find where his PowerPoint document was to launch it. He finally voiced his angry frustration that he spends most of his time now trying to find or do things on his new computer cursed with Windows 8.1. Most of the audience nodded or voiced their solidarity with him. I’ve known the guy for 30+ years and he is no dummy. Not a very glowing testimonial for a new computer operating system! To further underscore the problem, I had just completed a successful slide presentation using LibreOffice running on Linux.

I use a Surface Pro Tablet PC....love Windows 8.1 for touch and desktop use.

Maybe I can educate some of you about business:

Microsoft (and most everyone else) knows that tablets, smartphones and other devices are the future.

Microsoft also knows how reluctant people are to learn new things (just read any thread about Windows 8/8.1)

So, Microsoft is trying to converge the user experience of your smartphone, PC, tablet, Xbox, etc. into something similar and familiar.

That is long-term thinking that neither Apple nor Google have.
