It's so much easier watching the kidz at their home.

I lost a few more in the cold frame, but not much more. I'll be restarting some peppers and tobacco.

I am very disturbed about this Jiffy Seed Starter - not a single seed has sprouted in any cup (9 cups) with this stuff in it. That includes Tromboncino Squash and Deck Corn and other important seeds.

Of seeds I planted in Miracle Grow seed starter on 2-24, 50% came up-the tycoon tomatoes, and toy choi. The other 50% Tromboncino Squash seeds you sent, and some Big Bertha Peppers were all no shows.

Of the Seeds I planted on 1-24 Tycoon and Aroma tomatoes all came up. Streamliner cucumbers, 25% came up, and zukes, and yellow squash, 50% came up.

I have everything off the outdoor plants, even the netting. I think I have to put row cover on all of them before dark as I can't trust the squirrels to not show up early in the morning and eat those plants. Well, the net is still over the strawberries but nothing else. It's difficult to put the net over everything that is out there now as the net hangs up on anything it touches and it's hell to keep getting it off stuff to get it over the plants. Can do row cover much faster.

Right now, the outlook is for 30 this coming Sunday night. I hope that changes.

Somewhere I had a small shopping cart with wheels that I would take to the car to help me get groceries in, but I can't find that thing. It wasn't strong so couldn't carry a lot of pounds. I know I'm not having the engineer here the next time I have to move something from the trunk related to gardening, so I ordered one from Sears yesterday. It is larger so will hold more pounds. I guess some day the small one will show up. It may have gotten put in the room with prepping stuff and I can't see it. It's not worth spending a lot of time to find since it is so small. I normally know where everything is, but that one isn't where I thought it was.

I am really ticked off about the Jiffy seed starter. Being new to this game, I thought everything worked like it said it did. I guess I'm glad I found out before the SHTF. I'll get a larger bag of the Espoma so it will last for some time. Seeds want to grow in that.

You don’t have any Tromboncino at all? I will send you some more. Somewhere I have your address.

I have 3 seeds left..one plump looking one, and 2 small ones. I was going to order some but the places I looked-the shipping was more than the seeds. One of them, territorial, or Southern Exposure, or Bountiful Gardens-I forget which charges $7.50 shipping.

I wish Park or Burpee had them. I would've gotten some on that Free Shipping Deal.

BTW, I uncovered my potatoes today. Even under plankets, the tops froze. All, except one.

Today, and tomorrow are supposed to be good for planting above ground stuff. I am tempted to plant that one plumpy looking Tromboncino seed.

I will send you some Tycoon Tomato Seeds if you want. The germination rate is supposed to be 70%, but mine has been 100%.

In other boring sockmonkey news, I found my first sow bugs under my napa cabbage that is in the greenhouse..First, it was the aphids they had from the nursery which dawn & listerine cured, now it's pill bugs..

“I am tempted to plant that one plumpy looking Tromboncino seed.”

I’ll go through the envelope and pick out only plump ones.

I’ll tell you this but don’t tell anyone else on this gardening thread, okay? I don’t know one gardening bug/insect from another. Aphids/pill bugs, means nothing to me. I can recognize a lady bug and that’s it.

“I uncovered my potatoes today. Even under plankets, the tops froze. All, except one.”

Does that mean they are ruined if the tops froze? I'm assuming the three containers I have seed potatoes in are okay since everything else was. Those three containers were under a quilt with other plants. I don't know where one buys moving quilts but I'd get two or three more if I can find them - oh, wait, Amazon has everything in the world. I wonder if those are expensive? Those were the easiest to use to cover plants and they are thick ‘cause they are quilted. I don't know how I ended up with moving quilts - it had to be movers leaving them and I didn't find them until later.

.....The soil mix was sterilized in cooking bags and trays were sterilized with a 10 percent bleach solution.

We’ve added heating pads and plastic trays from WalMart. Grow lights and fixtures are from Lowes.

You mention a couple of things that interest me.

1. You sterilize the soil mix. If it is fresh mix, Why?

2 What type of heating pads are you using that you purchased from Walmart? I believe my squash seed starts have trouble germinating due to my soil mix being too cold, but the horticultural heating pads have gotten very expensive (I am guessing due to increased demand from the medicinal and legal pot movements). If you are using a regular heating pad, wouldn’t that be dangerous with water/moisture from the plant starts?

3. What type of grow lights did you use. I have seen some “broad spectrum” lights which are being marketed as better....

If you have moving blankets from a moving company, there is small chance that you would find a similar quality at any affordable price. But, if you want some economy blankets, up to industrial, try this:

http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/category_material-handling+moving-blankets?

They have a store at 336/I-45 by your house. I would call first because the store does not stock every item in the catalog. But if they have some, you can look and touch before buying.

I should have noted that they have free ship to the store, I think, and the nice people there will surely carry them to your car for you.

No, they're not ruined as the soil didn't freeze. They'll just send up new shoots.

Northern Tool - the quilts I want are two of these and they are at the Conroe Store - 6+ dollars each, a good deal:

http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200511659_200511659

NOW, tell me where this store is - what is next to it or close to it? I have lived in Conroe since 2003, and you haven’t been here long but you know where stuff is and I don’t. It appears it is on my shopping street but I haven’t noticed it. Everything in the world, except medical doctors, are on my street. My dentist is also on my street.

So, where is it exactly?

I may get three of those quilts, thinking about the net room, one would cover those plants. I didn’t have anything in there this time, but surely could next winter. The other two quilts, plus the ones I have, will cover everything I could possibly have.

So, where is the store?

Just calm down, I just took a supper break.

It is in the same area as Hobby Lobby, at I-45, same side as you live on. There is a long strip mall beside HL and somewhere along there it is. I think you drive past the HL, Chinese Buffet, then to Northern Tool a short ways down.

Or. Leave your townhouses and go left rather than towards Walgreens, to the street on the right that goes out to the I-45 feeder road. Go right on the feeder(only way to go) and look right towards that strip mall till you see it.

Sorry, my memory is only so good. I dont go in that strip mall often. Only been to Northern once.

— you haven’t been here long but you know where stuff is and I don’t.—

I do go ‘sploring. But don’t ask about anything below 105. :)

I got a circular in the mail when they opened the local store about a year ago.

Northern has some cheapie stuff like Harbor Freight, but also carry better stuff too. pick up a free catalog while you are there. And HF is down around 45 and Sam Houston. I dont go that close to Megatropolis.

If you would bother to taste the bugs you run across, you would learn one from the other. You won't even squish 'em with your fingers. ;)

Guys have a 7th sense about places like Northern Tool. We just know where they are intuitively. ;)
