There are certain factors you should consider when living through an extended emergency. It is common for your physical, mental and emotional state to be affected following a disaster. On top of that, you are hungry due to rationing food portions and still have to continue daily activities, physical labor, parenting, etc. If you havent put thought into the right types of food and the amounts needed to see you through the ordeal, then you could be setting yourself up for deficiencies in your diet.
Repeatedly, I have told readers interested in leading a self reliant lifestyle to simulate a disaster at home so that your family can practice living through it using the supplies you have. This creates a safe environment to prepare and train family members for what they might expect and help you learn what you may need for the future. Using the contents of your emergency pantry is no different. In fact, you should be using your pantries regularly to ensure the food you store is as fresh as possible. In my cookbook, The Preppers Cookbook, I list 25 must have foods for your pantries and also touched on what to expect in an emergency situation when you are rationing your supplies.

Just received another month of freeze dried food today.
Back in the 1980’s, when there was a famine in Ethiopia, MRE was said to stand for Meals Rejected by Ethiopians.
1. Canned fruits, vegetables, meats, and soups
2. Dried legumes (beans, lentils, peas)
3. Crackers
4. Nuts
5. Pasta sauce
6. Peanut butter
7. Pasta
8. Flour (white, whole wheat)
9. Seasonings (vanilla, salt, pepper, paprika, cinnamon, pepper, taco seasoning, etc.)
10. Sugar
11. Bouillon cubes or granules (chicken, vegetable, beef)
12. Kitchen staples (baking soda, baking powder, yeast, vinegar)
13. Honey
14. Unsweetened cocoa powder
15. Jell-O or pudding mixes
16. Whole grains (barley, bulgur, cornmeal, couscous, oats, quinoa, rice, wheat berries)
17. Nonfat dried milk
18. Plant-based oil (corn oil, vegetable oil, coconut oil, olive oil)
19. Cereals
20. Seeds for eating and sprouting
21. Popcorn (not the microwavable kind)
22. Instant potato flakes Instant potato flakes
23. Packaged meals (macaroni and cheese, hamburger helper, Ramen noodles, etc.)
24. Purified drinking water
25. Fruit juices, teas, coffee, drink mixes

When I was in there was a brownie in some of the meals. The brownie tended to work things loose.
Found that out after about 4 days on top of a mountain.
Learn how to garden. Consider potatoes, one of the best sources of both calories and nutrition (be sure to eat the skin too).
In the days of communism, the Russians encouraged their people to grow potatoes on the little plots of land the commissars gave their higher ranking worker bees. Supposedly potatoes gave more calories and nutrition than anything else that could be grown in that amount of land.
So... We tried growing potatoes last year and failed miserably. We DID get some potatoes, but not nearly as many as we should have.
We’ll try again this year and hopefully do better.
Moral of this story: Learn now, when you can afford to make mistakes. It ain’t as easy as it looks...

Different topic: Everyone wants to know WHEN the SHTF will start. None of us knows, but I personally believe time is short.
One reason is that Obama is at risk of losing control of the Senate, and many of the new guys will not be the spineless weaklings we call “Republicans” now. Obama can not tolerate opposition, and will not tolerate losing power.
Obama has laid the foundation for social chaos, and could trigger it at will. He has also built the domestic army he needs to impose marital law in response. This could even keep him in power indefinitely, but would need to be done before he loses control of Congress.
Yes, I think he would stoop that low. In fact I’m SURE he would if he felt he could pull it off.
If he decides to make a move like that he will need to do it relatively soon. No later than this summer.
I do not know if he will actually do this, but I think it prudent to set a goal of being “ready” no later than July.
Something else could be coming instead, or multiple things at once. But there is one thing I’m sure of:

Do you or anyone else on this thread have a source for a good long term storage Bouillon cube, freeze dried beef/chicken stock, or Beef/chicken/onion soup base with long shelf lives? Most everything I’ve seen doesn’t have much of a shelf life.
I know that there is a guy in LA county that gives classes about what weeds and other wild-grown edibles that are safe to eat. His whole diet is pretty much free. Yummy acorns.

Taking wildfood classes for your specific region is a good survival tip.
That's why the Irish peasants survived on them for generations.

I might sign up for his next class in foraging. I know his student do a complete meal with what they find and make a great salad with a spritz of lemon and other available seasoning. It kinda of looked yummy.
I also know if you like snails you can feed them a cornmeal diet for a month to clean them out and they are good to sauté with garlic but that’s not my cup of tea.
