You might well think that the catastrophic destruction of firearms caused by shooters leaving their cleaning rods inside their guns was a rare occurrence, but you would be wrong. It happens far to often. These photos show what happens when a cleaning rod is left in a .338 Lapua Magnum rifle. A member of the SnipersHide forum reported that this KABOOM happened two benches down from him at the range. The shooter only sustained minor injuries. Two holes were punched in roof and pieces of the rifle were scattered around the range.

Sorry, but it takes a special kind of stupid to leave a cleaning rod in a gun and actually firing it that way.
Shooter was having problems getting the brass to eject so was using the cleaning rod to push them out.
Not surprising somebody there would touch off a round with a cleaning rod in the barrel.
My freind left a laser bore sighter in his revolver while sighting in a red dot........ pretty much the same effect.
Firing one of those would be bad enough without it blowing up.
Expensive stupidity...
Glad no one was seriously hurt.

My favorite was an Airman I knew who shoved a potato onto the muzzle of a rather nice stainless Remington 700 with a .300 Win Mag chambering, at which point he promptly called it a “redneck-silencer” and pulled the trigger. The barrel only split/peeled back in three directions, the receiver didn’t explode. The look on his face was priceless, as was the ass-chewing that was given to him, and the two NCOs present when he was making that video, and later posting it on Youtube. It has since been taken down.

Looking at that box of rounds tells Me that somebody needs to stop reloading till they learn properly and instead use some Factory ammo.

I have read that during the War Between the States, it was pretty common for soldiers in the heat of battle to leave the ram rod in the bore. Black powder is pretty low pressure so the guns probably didn’t blow up every time.
So factory ammo fired down a barrel with a cleaning rod jammed in it, like in this instance, wouldn’t blow it? Sounds to me like hand jive ammo had nothing to do with this gomer move that went boom.
Too hot loads, maybe - since the brass was apparently getting stuck in the chamber?
Looks like the dumb-a$$ once had a very nice rig. He's lucky to be alive.
.338 makes a big bang.
It might even launch the ramrod like a missile.
