Obviously the officer THOUGHT he had a weapon and reacted but unfortunately in the wrong way. Put yourself in her position having just “accidentally” killing that young man. She will NEVER be the same.
I know of an police officer that HAD to kill a crazed man who had already shot two officers and to keep the man from killing more people. He has been haunted by that NECESSARY killing since that terrible day some years ago. Killing someone is not like TV, it’s REAL and permanent.
She is alive...and should be in prison for manslaughter.
Golly, why should any murderer be charged with a crime? Following your logic, every perp must feel just awful about his or her deed and that’s punishment enough.
Frankly, I don’t care what that officer’s feelings were after she shot the teenager. She screwed up - badly - deadly.
The police should produce a real weapon or a reasonable facsimile that isn’t a game controller that can substantiate this officer’s claims. If not, then she should be charged and tried for manslaughter - minimum.
Further, the purpose of the ‘raid’ was to get the father for “probation violation”....doesn’t sound to me like that dire of a situation to warrant a hair-trigger killing of a teenager.
Really!!!
She will be 1000 times SAMER than the kid who she has deaded.
Think of all the things that she is now doing and can do and will do that her victim cannot do.
That reasoning is truly hollow --
Either will the 17 year old boy.
At least the officer went home safe and sound.
Nothing else matters.
Nothing.
If I were in her position, I would be in jail charged with 1st degree murder.
And the young man that this officer killed will never be the same again.............................
“Put yourself in her position having just accidentally killing that young man. She will NEVER be the same.”
She’s better off than the boy she murdered or his family.
She needs to go to prison.
At the least, involuntary manslaughter.
No special treatment for government employees. Period.
Treat her as any mundane who shot before identifying what he was shooting at, and before determining whether the target actually posed a deadly threat, would be treated.
Some will be "haunted," for others, it will be just another speed bump on the way to a pension.
There are still good police, you just can't tell the difference by looking.
The murderer, in her own words:
“My name is Nancy Beth Gatny, Beth Gatny to those who know and love me, Officer Gatny to those who dont and I used to be Beth Daniel of Lebanon, Mo.
I believe they think I am more than a little odd. I can try to pep talk myself into believing that I need to focus but the little weirdo that lives inside me, she is off her meds, dancing through the trees and singing off key at the top of her voice yep going to be a great day, I can feel it!!!”>

She will be the same. Her incompetence will mean that she can murder again.
She should be in jail or out on bond. There is no way to justify killing an innocent. Not because he lived at a trailer park, not because his father has an outstanding warrant, nothing.
Cops justify killing by saying they just want to go home at night. If they are too afraid to stand at a door without pulling the trigger when it opens they need to be in another line of work. Their desire to go home at night does not trump my or your right to go home at night or to stay alive. They do this again and again and then lawyer up and cover for each other. They are criminals. Let me repeat that to make sure I made myself clear THEY ARE CRIMINALS!
That still does not mean it wasn’t a crime.
