New research on Mount Hood in Oregon suggests that volcanoes can come up with liquid hot magma in as little as a couple of months, but most of the time, they contain magma that has been kept cool for thousands of years.
"If the temperature of the rock is too cold, the magma is like peanut butter in a refrigerator," said Adam Ken, an Oregon State University (OSU) geologist.
"It just isn't very mobile. For Mount Hood, the threshold seems to be about 750 degrees C - if it warms up just 50 to 75 degrees above that, it greatly decreases the viscosity of the magma and makes it easier to mobilise."
The key is when much hotter magma from deep within the Earth's crust comes up to meet the jellied magma four or five kilometres below the surface. The mixing of hot and cold is what triggered the last two eruptions at Mount Hood 220 and 1,500 years ago.

"What is encouraging from another standpoint is that modern technology should be able to detect when magma is beginning to liquefy, or mobilise," Kent said, "and that may give us warning of a potential eruption. Monitoring gases, utilising seismic waves and studying ground deformation through GPS are a few of the techniques that could tell us that things are warming."

Yes, for the region the rapid awakening of St. Helens con be well explained by this. The Pacific Northwest is full of potential. 80 miles to the east of us is Crater Lake and north of that The Three Sisters, Mt Hood, Mt Adams and dozens of lesser known volcanos. To the South there are Mt. Shasta and Mt. Lassen. The most strikingly beautiful volcano and the most dangerous is Mt Ranier. Fun times in store for all.
It's Mt Rainier, an ACTIVE Volcano of 14,400ft.
It's covered by 36 sq miles of glaciers.
150,000 people live on it's most recent medflows/lahars.
If it were to blow like St Helens it would take out 6-8 good sized towns and easily kill 300,000 people. Most would drown in the cubic mile of water it would shed.

Rainier is dangerous given the issues you’ve mentioned, but Glacier Peak is probably the most threatening; it has a tendency to develop lava domes on its flanks and these not only have the capacity to lead to large lahars, slides coming off it have dammed the Sauk, Stillaguamish and Skagit and altered their courses. The debris flow that that makes up the Skagit flats and the Mt Vernon, Burlington, Sedro Wooley area was from a single event and represents 10 cubic miles of mud. At 10,500 it’s big, but because of its location it really can’t be seen and is basically ignored. But despite the fact that it has been one of the most active Cascade volcanoes, it has the least amount of monitoring.
If you really want to sweat a geologic hazard, just imagine the M9 when the Cascadia Subduction Zone unzips from Vancouver Island all the way to the California border. Going to be pretty nasty.
