WASHINGTON, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Twenty-six percent of U.S. respondents do not realize Earth revolves around the sun, a survey by the National Science Foundation indicated.

The NSF conducts the poll on some basic science facts every two years, The Atlantic reported. The foundation said there has been little change in the percentages of correct answers since 1992.

Okay I’ve been lazy. I know the difference between its and it’s, but my smartphone is too stupid to insert the apostrophe when needed.

I applaud you for your attention to the English language. Should you ever confuse “fewer” and “less”, I will be sure to let you know.

I see your reference (your post 54). You, of course, understand the difference, which is at variance with at least 80 percent of comments I see on FR that bring up either "its" or "it's.".

If people would notice the spelling as they read published works they would know to spell correctly. More's the pity.

BTW, did you know that Thomas Jefferson maintained that the possessive pronoun should be spelled "it's"?

Do keep me on my toes. I am acutely aware of the difference between "less" and "fewer."

To be really picky about it; both Earth and Sol orbit the center of mass of the system.

How many in the U.S. know that people lie to pollsters, intentionally mislead them, how many know not to post duplicate threads, and how many know the difference between “its” and “it’s”?

I take strong exception to your duplicate thread reference.
Every Freeper knows not to post duplicates of threads previously posted, but only certified ESP-ers can avoid doing it consistently.

From the reader's perspective, it's a silly nonsensical rule anyway.
Personally, I would rather suffer duplicate threads that I can skip over, than miss a truly interesting thread posted a half hour to four hours ago, depending on how busy a posting day it happens to be.

You are right. Earth and its solar system orbit around the center of the Milky Way, at a rate of 500,000 mph. It’s true, but I’m not feeling the wind. It’s all relative.

I was just thinking last night about why there were 365 days per year, 24 hours in one day, sixty minutes per hour and sixty seconds per minute and how it related to the Earth’s rotation. How in the hell did Copernicus figure that out without an astronomy book?

Survey was in cursive. 26% can not read cursive?

I overheard a conversation earlier this week. Female said she just got a raise of $8,000 in her new job. Male asked how many hours in a year she worked. Her response was 40 hours per 49 weeks. The male then asked again how many that was in a year. Her answer? “I dunno. I wasn’t hired for my math skills.” The male then said “Wait, I think I have a calculator feature (on some device)...” He then punched the numbers and gave the answer. Really, that was the conversation. Not even an estimate of 40 x 50 (round off the numbers).

Heh. Reminded me of Sherlock. In both the BBC series and the original book, Watson is aghast that Holmes didn’t know the earth revolved around the sun.

Holmes defended himself by saying that he had to remember too many important things to clutter his mind up with such trivia.

When Bubba became POTUS.

And appointed an idiot to the head of education that stated that self-actualization of teachers was more important than the students' education.
