Disruptive Energy Generation
London - With ever-declining reliability in supply and escalating electricity costs, more Ontario manufacturers are moving south. Remaining employers are hesitant to expand or to hire. At the same time the government talks about reducing the number of regional distribution utilities in a desperate attempt to obtain economies of scale needed to attract investment for upgrading legacy infrastructure. Old nuclear and coal plants require expensive retro fits, and transmission lines need to be expanded. Meanwhile solar installations by major industries and big-box retailers cut into the traditional captive customer base. Such then are some of the background economic metrics as the specter of LENR (Low Energy Nuclear Reactors) suddenly replacing both fossil-fueled plants and nuclear ones appear. And, the new distributed technology ultimately makes redundant an extensive national and international electrical grid.
Many readers will say, What the hell is LENR? Basically it is a form of energy where hydrogen interacts with nickel to create excess heat. LENR is not radioactive and there are no waste products. Low Energy Nuclear Reactors were perfected over the last couple of years by Italian and by American experimenters. As soon as the portable units reached the manufacturing stage, a couple of aggressive Asian countries granted patents while the US Patent Office played domestic politics by declaring Cold Fusion had no utility. It is also likely the US government wanted to ensure that research protect research grants continued to support hot fusion. A South Korean company promptly secured rights to produce and market the Brillouin LENR boiler, and a Chinese firm did much the same with Rossis E-Cat. China will now move quickly with these cheap and clean units to fix its air pollution problem, and allow its energy intensive industries to become even more competitive in world markets.
So until another company, perhaps Defkalion (Can) or BackLight Power (US) get Canadian and/or US patents, North American countries have no alternative but to import a game-changing technology. If Canada does not get a US green light on critical pipeline proposals, it might consider an end-run by immediately granting Canadian LENR patents to all comers. Such action is inevitable anyway, so we might as well do it now. This fixes our unemployment problem. That however, is unlikely to happen because some of our ostrich-like policy makers have their heads stuck in the tar sands. In fine tuning Ontarios Long Term Energy Plan, the Minister in charge seemed to sense that just over the horizon was a cool solution to the energy mix quandary, and so he opted not to entrench nuclear in the plan. Surprisingly, he had the courage to quench coal-fired plants and to defer refurbishing of aged nuclear ones. Our astute visionary might have made funds available to universities for research and innovation on the means to replace dirty coal and dangerous nuclear

If they’d said this years ago rather than use the words “cold fusion” there might have been less push back on principle.
That said these folks would garner themselves a lot more money and attention if they could plunk down successful experiments in front of a lot of different audiences and have them poke and prod them so as to show the experiments do what they say they’ll do—even when they’re around unbelievers.
This article looks like its trying to gin up some buzz for lenr by suggesting that unless americans get with the program the asians are going to take away the biz.
This would be effective maybe if there were a biz, a working energy generator —or even an experiment. but so far the authors have not sold the public on even the experimental results.

The Wright brothers went through a similar phase, from 1903 to 1908. They were treated to a steady stream of lookieloos who asked for demos but none of them were in a position to write a check & buy airplanes upon successful demo. That is, until the Army wrote up an unbelievable contract for a flying machine and the Wrights met every technical requirement.

I can’t say that I understand or particularly believe any of it — but if someone has laid down 20 million and the feds are willing to stick their toe in the water—that means that someone with some understanding somewhere has evaluated the technology and seen something.

***Well, there’s a trick here. LENR has been on the verge for a long time but no one would butt against the stupidity of current phycisism until Rossi. So the establishment brass who would choose to stay on top of things would continue to fund SPAWAR until there is some kind of showdown. That showdown is either right here or on the horizon.

I agree, that the technology has moved past that territory, for awhile— but Rossi’s and others’ technology is so compelling that it is worth investigating. In Rossi’s case, if he’s a con artist, he’s among the top 3 in all of history. And I can’t think of 2 others... maybe Al Gore? Obama?

For the most part, I would say... yup.
I put blacklight at 70% vaporware/30% genuine science/development.
Won't happen. Not because of a lack of successful experiments (there are plenty of those), but because the pathological skeptics simply refuse to examine the data. And that is true both here on FR and in the wider world.
Case in point. At last year's "Cold Fusion Short Course" at MIT (in the EE dept.....NOT Physics), Mitchell Schwartz demonstrated his "Nanor" generator. It ran for the entire period of the course (course participants directly took data from the calorimetry and did their own calculations of excess heat), for another two months in Hagelstein's office, and then a far longer time back at Schwartz's lab.
NOT ONE PHYSICIST bothered to walk the short distance across campus to even look at the system.

No it is NOT a line item for research. The paper is a request for proposals for research for ‘out of the box’ ideas.
