Chief promises full investigation after Chesapeake Bay Retriever is shot twice in front yard
An Anne Arundel County police officer shot and killed a family's dog Saturday while investigating a burglary, officials said.
Police said the officer a one-year veteran of the force who was not identified was canvassing a neighborhood looking for witnesses around 4 p.m. Saturday.
When the officer went to a home in 900 block of Lombardee Circle in Glen Burnie the dog a male Chesapeake Bay Retriever named Vern "confronted" the officer in the front yard, police said. The officer then fired his weapon twice, killing the dog, police said.

Vern
Scumbag trigger-happy cop, one of Maryland’s finest.
I have developed a strong distaste for cops. In the 60’s, my uncle had a donut shop. I remember one cop bragging he was going to shoot some punk when he ran from him. The cops called it “the cop attitude”. If you weren’t a cop you were a perp.
“Take a day, and walk around, watch the Nazis run your town.” - Frank Zappa, “Plastic People”
FR needs a “Jack-Booted thug” ping list. This is what American cops have been morphing into for the last ten+ years.
They are young bucks that have watched to many TV cop shows.
I don’t see in the article that the dog was on a leash, or restrained by a fence.
If dogs are allowed to run loose, bad things can happen.
Great idea...it seems one of these stories turns up every damn day. This is done as an act of intimidation.
If you injure a K-9, it’s considered an assault on an officer.
Apparently, the cop’s dogs have more rights than people.
When I hear “pit bulls” in a story, I give the cops the benefit of the doubt, but retrievers? Bull$h!t.
The dog was in the owner’s yard. At any rate, until cops start paying for this it will just go on.
“Vern barked and ran toward the officer, prompting the shooting”
Yet, George Zimmerman had to have his head beaten on concrete before he was even considered to be allowed to draw.
My sister has a 9 yr old Labradoodle that is the sweetest dog in the world. She is often unrestrained on her own property and will bark at strangers. Is that enough to shoot her?
de rigour....nothing to see here....move along.
The officer was basically trespassing across front yards. Just because you have a uniform, gun, and badge does not give you the 'right' to come onto any owners property without permission. Wow. What is it with these da*% cops and dogs?
The dog did what he instinctual knew to do. Run up, bark at you, and look menacing(maybe). The officer was not in an active pursuit, running, etc. so there was no reason ...other than the officer's own stupidity at work here.
” these stories turns up every damn day. This is done as an act of intimidation.”

You are right. Cops do not resemble those that I knew 25+ years ago.
The verdict will be that “It was fully justified.”
Lots of people have electronic Invisible Fences.
I don’t see in the article where the officer was restrained from ‘crossing front yards’ without permission.
You better keep your children on a leash when they are outside, also.Any living thing can cause an officer to “feel threatened.” If an officer “feels threatened” he is obligated to kill the object of that feeling.
There’s a reason why towns have leash laws.
By allowing the dog to run loose, without human supervision, its owners’ negligence contributed to the situation.
